One of the greatest tests of someone's character is in the ability and the courage to stand alone when their values, principles, and beliefs are challenged. There are some people that cannot stand alone. They will be doing something which is obviously wrong, not because they want to do it, but because they see others do it, and they do not want to be alone. What they fail to understand is that the majority can actually be wrong. In the same way, one person can be right. So why do you not want to be that person? In the journey of your life, you may face criticism, rejection, disappointment, and opposition, but it does not mean that you should compromise your values. You should value the truth, and integrity more than the need to feel belonged.

There are times that you need to declare a stand and abide by what is right and valuable, even if it means standing alone. You have to understand that standing alone does not mean that you should isolate yourself from others or to refuse advise. It means that you have the confidence to make the right decision even when others may disagree with you. Which means, you have refused to compromise your value just to gain public acceptance or public validation. It may not be easy to stand alone, but in the long run, you will gain growth, respect, and lasting success.
In order to develop the courage to stand alone, there are things that you need to observe to do. Firstly, you need to know what you are standing for. The truth is that if you do not know where you stand or what you stand for, you may be swayed any opinion. If you are not sure of your values, you will not know where to stand firm. You have to identify the principles that guide your life; like honesty, integrity, responsibility, respect, etc. This will help you to know what you stand for. So when something wants to go against your values and principles, you will take a stand and will not yield to it.
You also need to understand that everyone will not agree with you, but it is totally fine. That someone disagrees with you does not mean that you should abandon what you are doing if it is the right thing. As a matter of fact, that every other person is doing a particular thing does not automatically make it the right. When you accept this truth, it will set you free from the need for public approval or validation. We all have a conscience and a mind, so we know if what we are doing is right or not. It is true that you have to respect the opinions of others, but it does not mean that you should abandon your values because you do not want criticism. There are sometimes that the right decision can actually be the most unpopular one.

You have to also build your confidence in yourself. One of the reasons why people join the crowd is because they do not trust their own judgement. When you develop your self-confidence, it will help you to trust your own ability to make wise decisions. You can work on your confidence to build it by learning, gathering experience, and improving on your skills. When you overcome a challenge, it will help to strengthen you to believe in yourself. This does not mean that you should believe you know everything or that you are omniscient, but it means that you trust you can learn, grow, improve, adapt, and make responsible decisions. Believing in yourself is not pride, but showing that you have what it takes to learn and grow.
In addition to this, you have to learn to stay patient and trust the process. A lot of people tend to follow popular opinion because of the promises of quick results even if it does not align with their values and principles. You have to learn to stand for value and for what is right. Do not feel discouraged if others do not see the reason for your decisions. Continue to do what is right with consistency. You may not see the result immediately, but in the long run, the result will be so clear. Remember that it is not how far you get to the destination that counts, but how well.
