Today is the last day of poliac@poliac 17. Wonderful season for me. I am fighting with browery@browery for the 3rd place - my first ever podium in this competition.

After 32 out 34 match days we both had equal number of points and I was some 35k steps ahead. browery@browery is capable of closing that gap. I did 33k on Friday and the plan for Saturday was some 37k. So browery@browery would have to do over 105k in two days. If he did that, chapeau bas, I would salute such a show of might and determination.

Things however changed last night. I learnt that mervinthepogi@mervinthepogi, earlier expelled from the competition for inactivity (and banned from the next season), was allowed to compete in the last 2 matches, one of them against me.

I follow the player and like his methodical approach to fitness and healthy life style. But having him as an opponent - unexpectedly, after he had been expelled - was a game changer.

I had planned the Saturday hike some 3 weeks ago. And I had labelled it as “easy” (20km with 820m of elevation gain). So I attracted a party of 9. Now, the distance and elevation gain would have generated some 30k. Plus walk to train station and back 3k each way. Since this might have been not enough for mervinthepogi@mervinthepogi, I needed more steps. Well, I could do 50k on a hiking Saturday (I had showed that twice over the Easter weekend). However, I couldn’t possibly say to my group:

“Listen, I need to make more steps because some last minute rules change in a HIVE stepping competition, therefore we are doing +30km and 1500m of elevation gain”

Out of 9 people signed for my hike, only 3 would be physically capable of that. But because the trip was labelled as easy, they invited their partners / children and changing the rules last minute would have upset everyone.

So I completed the hike as planned and we really had a great time.

As anticipated, the hike and train station walks generated 37k steps. Just perfect for another contest, poprzeczka@poprzeczka. But in my opinion not enough for the changed poliac@poliac situation. So I added 1,5hrs walk thru the city in the night by getting off from the return train earlier. Not that much fun in my hiking boots and backpack. But I can say with all honesty that I have done my best. I kept my word to my hiking group - but still adapted to poliac@poliac rule tweaking (I think that poliac@poliac and browery@browery should have a good chat on that topic).
