Robin Hood (if existed) was a robber and killer. Yet in folk stories he lives as a hero.
I hiked today along a trail of 3 trans-border, real 'Robin Hoods'. Ondrašek Šebesta (CZ), Juraj Janosik (SK) and Sebastian Bury (PL) were three historical figures who lived in XVII-XVIII centuries and led bands of robbers in the border area of present day Czechia, Poland and Slovakia.
All were convinced, two executed (one was killed by his companion who hoped get the prize put on his head) and we know a lot details from the court proceeding archives.
Facts aside, all three were held in high esteem by the lowest classes and all became legends and protagonists of movies, poems and folk songs.
Now they have their own trail and we can follow their steps. No, we didn’t kill nor robbed anyone. But it was a great day hiking in present and discovering mysteries of history. The weather was very fitting, too.
