This is my new backpack for 1-day mountain trips.
Normally, I’d have bought one at Decathlon. They have great choice of all sports equipment, good quality and prices are reasonable. But this time I didn’t go to Decathlon. I have bought the backpack at a local, small shop, where I had a choice of… two. And probably paid more than I would have at Decathlon.
Why? The French moguls who control Decathlon, Auchan and Leroy Merlín markets, have decided to expand their operations in Russia, in answer to some other brands withdrawing or limiting their presence.
Today is my 20th day of volunteering at a shelter for displaced women and children from Ukraine. I see daily women in tears, calling / FaceTime’ing their husbands/fathers/brothers who heroically defend their homes against brutal, inhumane aggression. I see children who are afraid of every noise. I see women who a month ago were teachers or designers, but now are happy to take a cleaning job. Yesterday one of the women in our church got death certificate of her husband.
All this suffering coming from delirious ideas about an empire. While I cannot do anything against those directly responsible, I can and will protest by:
- Putting my money, time, efforts into helping the victims;
- Refraining from supporting subjects who in any way profit by or from the aggression
Expanding commercial presence in the aggressor’s country brings the owners money stained by blood of innocent women and children. I will not buy anything from companies who don’t understand basic principles of humanity. Neither will I buy anything with bar codes beginning with 461, 462, …. 469 as these are made in Russia.
PS. I am not ruso-phobic. I speak Russian and have read few great books by Russian authors in original. I appreciate their cultural and scientific achievements. And I do have Russian friends. However, I am P..n-phobic and that includes everyone who directly or indirectly profits from the aggression.
