The first group of women from Ukraine that found shelter at my church, had simply escaped from potential harm. Some had contacts (family/friends) and after 2-3 days with us, move on. Some have nowhere to go and we are helping them to find stability - place to live and work. Two of them are with me on the presented photo, posing in front of the castle in our town. All happy.
But now we are receiving women and children who have seen and experienced the atrocities of the aggression first hand. Today, a family of four (two sisters, with a kid each) have arrived. Before escaping, that had spent 9 days in a basement. Water and some dry food. No bathroom. The last few days w/o electricity. Hollow faces, sad, empty eyes. For a couple of hours we couldn’t even talk with them. Any noise made them crying and hiding. It will be some time before their bodies assert that it’s all safe now. I am not a psychologist but it could leave them with a scar for life. Will they ever be #AliveAndThriving? I pray and hope they will.
