As I organise my hiking trip, I am the “alpha male” - the guide who leads my small group. Today I got a competition. A local guide joined - uninvited - my group and took the lead.
After we had hiked about 1km, I gladly accepted the new guide. It was… a local dog who apparently likes hiking. He joined and without a word (shall I without a “woof”?) went ahead. He went up our planned trail, when we lagged behind, he clearly waited for us!
In deep snow the dog knew the best path. At one place he went off the marked trail. I didn’t trust him, as it was early on our expedition. So we went along the marked trail and literally sank in knee-deep snow. What a surprise when 200m further we saw our guide ahead of us! And the look on the dog’s face was like “oh you stubborn two-legged creatures, why you hadn't you followed me? I know the best route here!" He had found a path with less snow!
He went with us all the way to the summit. He gladly accepted the food we shared. And then went down to the village where our car was. Seeing us safely out of the woods, he went his own way. What an amazing dog - #AliveAndThriving.
