I promise the title of this post is not clever clickbait, it’s actually pretty accurate, I am a selfish person, and I’m pretty proud of that fact. You might read the title, these lines, and think that today might be the day you do your first flag. But before you flag away, allow me to tell you why you should be selfish too.
It took a while for me to accept that I was selfish, but the process of accepting it, probably started with one innocent question.
The Question: Who am I?
Attempting to define the "self" is not easy. There are probably thousands of books at this point completely driven by this quest, and yet not one single one holds an answer that works for every single one of us complex humans. Why is that? How is it that the more we ask ourselves who we are, the more we get lost in thought and uncertainty?
For most of my adult life, I’ve been trying to find that answer, and the sense of purpose that comes along with that moment of sublime eureka. But, just like many others before me, I will probably live most of this life in the endless search, but I've learned to be OK with that.
There is however a few things that I have learned about myself so far, a few truths that have become pretty apparent, or at least they have to me.
- I am not my name, that is what people use to refer to me
- I am not my ID/SSN, that is how the government keeps tabs on me
- I am not my skin, this body, that is just my current vessel and its quite temporary
In my best efforts to define who I am, the only logical conclusion I reach is that... I am what I perceive... what I see, hear, touch, taste and experience of this world. I will grant you such thought is quite abstract, but it seems to be the closest thing to a "truth" I've found so far.
If that is the case, if I am the things I see, the things I touch, the things I eat, the people who I talk to, the people who are part of my life and participate of this experience with me.
How hard is it to think I want the best for them, If they are me after all?!! It’s quite simple actually, I want my brother to be happy, because his life is part of me, I want my friends to be happy, to be successful, to live in abundance and peace, because they are also part of me.
And I’m one selfish mothertrucker, I want nothing but the best for me. I want to make sure nothing that is part of my experience of life is lacking. It’s really that simple, and maybe that naive.
After all... How can I enjoy my sandwich, if there is another part of me who is hungry who won’t get to eat a can of tuna? How can I enjoy having this venue/platform, to share my thoughts, to share my songs, to share music with my Steemian friends, if I don’t see all of them also enjoying their time here too, finding the value and purpose I find in this community, the amazing opportunity we are all participating of.
Like I said before, I’m selfish… and to steal a line from @aggroed all I want is for all of me (that is us) to find Peace, Abundance and Liberty, and I don't think its an impossible goal, at least not anymore.... I think my selfish plans have found a way to become reality.
