When it comes to financial education, many school curriculums do not place enough emphasis on the subject, talk less of adequately teaching the subject matter.
The closest I got to having a financial education was in secondary school and the subject was Economics. I'm sure many Nigerians are familiar with this subject. When I got to the university, I went to study something that was not related to finances at all.
Still, the financial education received was not deep enough to instill appropriate knowledge in students about finances. Many students left school with little education on financial education.
What is financial education?
Financial education is learning how to manage your money well so it works for you or it can also be knowledge plus skills needed to make smart decisions about money at every stage of life.
There are necessary financial skills to learn like budgeting, savings, setting financial goals, investing e.t.c.
Following the definitions above, I can say that such depth knowledge is not taught in school on finances. I wished we have been taught more about financial management and investmentst in school back then.
Many children in my country are not introduced to financial education at a young age because some parents feel it would cause their children to become immoral and lose focus on their education.
Another reason is that many parents are not doing well themselves and we all know that you cannot give what you don't have. Children from such backgrounds find it difficult to grasp financial education, management and investmentst early on.
So far, having accrued some level of knowledge on finances, I have learned that having a sound financial education is important. Now I know how to make good financial investments and how to patiently wait for my investments to yield returns.
I am on a journey of attaining financial stability. Knowing this, I am still learning to manage finances and put my money to work. One good way is how I am investing in my financial business. Making the most of every opportunity that I come across.
