I’ve never completely understood the hype around celebrities. Yes they’re on TV or in our favourite movies but at the end of the day they’re just people, like you and I.
So what makes them so special? What makes people go crazy over them? I’ve had my fair few ‘celebrity crushes’ from John Travolta in Greece to Cole Sprouce in Riverdale but I’m beginning to ask myself, why?
At the end of the day I don’t know these people, I know the characters they play but I don’t know the actors personally. I think many of us (myself included) are guilty of crushing on the characters and not the actual actor/actress. Think about it for a second, Danny from Greece isn’t real, so my fantasy of us serenading one another will NEVER come true. Jughead from Riverdale isn’t going to show up and make me his Serpent Queen because let’s face it, he’s made up.
Since we know that the characters aren’t real we go after the next best thing, the actors/actresses. We’ll follow them on social media and maybe even try to get them to notice us, but why? How’s messaging Cole Sprouce any different from messaging a complete stranger who’s not famous? Why do people think it’s okay to message them? Some people say that it comes with their job, but I don’t think that’s true at all. Nobody is going to willingly sign up to be harassed everyday of their lives until people finally get bored of them. What’s the difference between a celebrity crush and a crush on someone you know in person? I think many of us just like the fantasy and those famous words ‘What If.’
Celebrities have everything, apart from privacy. Meaning those crazy fans can literally follow them everywhere. Imagine if the person you’re following wasn’t a celebrity, imagine if you were following just a normie, it would be called stalking. Somehow, people don’t seem to understand that celebrities are like us, they just have different jobs.
I’ve never been one to try and slide into a celebrities DMs because 9/10 times I know I’ll be setting myself up for disappointment, plus I hate being annoying. Why would I be disappointed? Because imagine all the messages after messages that these people get just for doing a job that makes them happy, and imagine how many people actually get a response, not many at all. I like to be my own person and don’t hang onto celebrities replying to me to help myself sleep better at night. I can’t even fathom how people willingly stay outside of hotels, or celebrity houses just to catch a glimpse of this person? Don’t you think that’s creepy at all?!
Now, I’m not saying I’m a saint as of course I had a stage when I was around 12/13 when Justin Bieber was my world. But I was a child. Now I’ve grown up I can see that Justin is kind of an asshole and doesn’t deserve my attention, although I’m not sure he’s too bothered either way.
I think highly of celebrities as I do most people and I don’t believe what the media tells us and frankly I don’t care. What’s more important to you, Global Warming or Kim Kardashians Sunday outfit? I’m really hoping you said Global Warming.
I guess what I’m trying to say is don’t get caught up in the celebrity world, live your own life and care about things that actually matter. Yes you may want to follow Ed Sheeran on Instagram but no it doesn’t mean you have to spam his inbox, would you do that with a complete ‘normal’ stranger too? Maybe it’s time we all just chill out and give these people some space.
But, on the other hand maybe some celebrities like the attention, I know the Kardashians certainly do. So how about give attention where it’s wanted not where it’s unwanted. You may be wondering how you’re going to know if it’s wanted or not, it’s not hard, just look at their social media accounts, you can tell.
I speak my mind 100% of the time. This is my opinion and might not be yours but that’s okay. Everyone, celebrity or not, is entitled to their honest opinion.
