When youtuber riceman approached a homeless man carrying a sign saying "United States Veteran in need, please help" and showed him a poster with photo of his missing brother he didn't expect what would happen when he walked away. The veteran put down his sign and held up the photo of the Ricemans brother to help look for him. The man was prepared to put his own well being aside to help find the missing brother. When Riceman returned to tell the Vet that he was being filmed for a youtube project he asked him why? the Veteran replied "what kind of person would i be if i didn't help someone else?"
You see, kindness has had kind of a bad name recently. Somehow it's become a sign of weakness and many of us would go about our weeks and days without giving much thought to this basic, human trait. Without stopping to take a second to consider if we have been kind to those around us today. Yet when we hear stories like this like this. Like the guy who gives the homless guy a winning scratch card, the like guy who leaves a $100 tip because the waitress seems sad it hits us hard in the feels. Because we haven't lost this, it's all around us every day and moreover we can use it to change the world. That guy who's the asshole in work? treat him so kindly that pretty soon he's got to change his ways because kindness has a funny way of breaking us down. Just imagine if every world leader committed to being relentlessly, unashamedly kind to each other. Wouldn't that change be seismic? would it go at least some way to curing the ills of the world?
Like dropping the pebble into the pond, Kindness has a way of filtering out from seemingly unassuming start and going on to do create further kindness. In the past few weeks, for example, a couple of people extended the hand of kindness here to me on steemit (here's looking at you @simplymike and
@blacklux), that meant that i got some really positive upvotes on some of my work and i then, not wanting to stop the flow of kindness, used some of the money to buy a soft toy for a little girl who struggles with Autism and uses soft toys to feel safe. From one kindness the ripples lead us to who knows where and maybe we don't really need to know. We just need to remember not to break the chain. Let it spread out as far as it can go and it can be a truly powerful, beautiful thing. A true symbol of the power for good in the human heart at a time when the mainstream media would have us believe we are descending into negativity and misery.
Ricky Gervais' new show highlights this point quite well. A man discovers the owner of kindness to the deserving over negativity. Was it a great show? Maybe. The point for me was that watching kindness in others affects people.
I believe it's at the core of who we are as human beings and connecting to it can lead us on a path to a much happier, more fulfilled life. Just take a second, stop and watch the world go by and you will see it all around you. Don't let the ripples of kindness stop with you. It's a big old pond.
