La eternidad no fue
Aquel éxtasis violento:
Era la grieta
En el mármol de la cocina
Donde se acumulan migajas
De inmemoriales tiempos;
Era el yeso de la pared
Guardando el eco
De locas carcajadas y portazos...

◆

(Recuerdo
aquella habitación sin muebles

Donde el tiempo se doblaba
Como el pabilo de una vela de cera.
Hoy solo quedan
Las marcas de los clavos en la pared:
Pequeños cráteres señalando
Dónde colgamos fantasmas).

◆

El amor no se apagó:

Se convirtió en carbón,
Una roca negra
Ardiendo sin llamas.
Lo encuentro en tu costumbre
De dejarme el último </center, >
Bocado del plato;
En cómo te ríes igual
Como en ese abril, en Santiago,
Cuando la lluvia nos convirtió en fugitivos
Bajo un toldo de plástico
Con olor a petróleo...

◆

Nuestras batallas

Son lentas ahora:
Discutimos por la altura de las persianas,
Por el ritmo al pelar las viandas.
Pero en tu modo
De doblar las servilletas
—Esquinas afiladas
Como declaraciones de guerra—
Reconozco a la mujer
Desafiando huracanes con un impermeable
Y un par de botas viejas...

◆

En nuestras arrugas hay un museo:

La cicatriz de tu rodilla;
Mi espalda guardando aún
La curvatura de tus noches en vela,
Amamantando fantasías.
Nos miramos
Y leemos Atlas completos:
Cada lunar es una ciudad conquistada,
Cada cana,
Un puente sobre ríos de dudas...

◆

La eternidad huele

A pasiones amortiguadas,
A pan quemado
En domingos perezosos.
No es un relámpago:
Es la lenta asimetría
De raíces adivinando su camino
Bajo la tierra.
Y cuando tus dedos rozan los míos
Al servir el café,
Seguimos escribiendo el mismo poema
Con tinta invisisble...

Eternity was not
That violent ecstasy:
It was the crack
In the kitchen marble
Where crumbs
Of immemorial times accumulate;
It was the plaster on the wall
The plaster of the wall keeping
The echo of mad laughter
And the slamming of doors...

◆

(I remember
that room

Without furniture where time
Bent like the wick of a wax candle.
Today only the marks of the nails
On the wall remain:
Little craters marking
Where we hung our ghosts).

◆

Love was not extinguished:

It became coal,
A black rock burning
Without flames.
I find it in your habit of leaving me
The last bite of the plate;
In how you laugh
Just as you did in that April,
In Santiago,
When the rain turned us
Into fugitives under a plastic awning
With the smell of oil....

◆

Our battles are slow now:

We argue over
The height of the blinds,
Over the rhythm
Of peeling the viands.
But in your way of
Folding the napkins
- Sharp corners like
Declarations of war -
I recognize the woman
Defying hurricanes
With a raincoat
And a pair of old boots...

◆

In our wrinkles

There is a museum:
The scar of your knee;
My back still keeping the curvature
Of your sleepless nights,
Nursing fantasies.
We look at each other
And read complete Atlases:
Each mole is a conquered city,
Each gray hair,
A bridge over rivers of doubts...

◆

Eternity smells

Of muffled passions,
Of burnt bread
On lazy Sundays.
It is not a flash of lightning:
It is the slow asymmetry
Of roots guessing
Their way under the earth.
And when your fingers brush mine
When pouring coffee,
We keep writing
the same poem
With invisible ink...
