Love Letter Contest on the 240th anniversary of the birth of Simón Bolívar.

Cecilia:

At this crucial moment I have all my thoughts in function of you. It is no coincidence, because I never, ever stop thinking about that moment, when you appeared before me like a flash of lightning, and since then your light but firm silhouette has never left me.

Would it ever be possible for that image to vanish from my horizon? I don't think so. You arrived, and together with me you have been bound to me until the moment when life becomes an eternal dream.

But what am I talking about? I don't want tears to tarnish the extraordinary brightness of your eyes. I can only ask you for a small corner in your most cherished memories, discarding everything linked to sadness.

You know that I am not in favor of wars and for that reason I do not feel this one as a necessary resource, proper to unload my hatreds against anything or anyone. If I get involved in it, it is not of my own free will.

Always be completely sure that I will survive this difficult test that circumstances have imposed on me; and if I do not do it physically, I will do it in spirit to be eternally by your side.

An infinite embrace...

Miguel.

By way of post data:

I wrote this letter on a fateful day in 1981, when I was twenty-three years old, to a person who still shares with me the vicissitudes that life has in store for us. I was being recruited for a mission in the convulsed Angola of that time. In such a situation, there is always the uncertainty of a safe return. I wrote it "just in case".

I never thought of publishing something so personal, and for that reason I have changed the name of the person to whom it was addressed, plus a few words that I do not like to use at this point because I consider them too melodramatic and out of place, everything else I have left intact.

Ah, this letter never reached its addressee. It was not necessary, I did not get to participate in that war because of a blessed illness that prevented me from doing so.

That is all. Thank you, and I hope it pleases those who like romantic letters.
