My cordial greetings to everyone in the community. It is a pleasure for me to write again, and to present to you, another of my chronicles about my old books treasured on my shelves.
This time it is about four volumes of the "Episodios Nacionales" by the prolific Spanish writer Benito Pérez Galdós.
What is the uniqueness of these books?
Many years ago, at the end of the 80's of the last century, I was walking along República Street, the most important commercial center of the city of Camaguey at that time, and I saw a man well advanced in years who was offering books in the living room of his house. Without thinking twice I asked for permission and went in to look at titles and authors.
The man had a very varied and interesting offer: "The Treasure of Youth", an encyclopedia that I enjoyed very much in my childhood because I could read in it "Tartarín de Tarascón", "Gulliver's Travels", and the unforgettable "Alice in Wonderland". The huge volumes of the old Enciclopedia Hispanoamericana were there, and in a corner, the books I am referring to this time. I began to leaf through them, and immediately saw that it was not a common edition, since they were printed with the author's personal stamp, the way the publishers had to avoid "piracy".
Well, I could only buy the four shades that I show you today because of my everlasting "financial crisis" in my pockets...
Each of the volumes contains two novels of the "Episodios Nacionales". I show them:
You may have noticed that they bear the author's personal stamp and the date of their edition, which is proof of their age, as some of them are now well over a hundred years old.
It is fortunate to be able to browse and read these works with their original narrative style and spelling because, in my opinion, when a contemporary edition is made, the atmosphere of the time described by the author and the freshness of the dialogues between the characters are almost always lost. I say this because I have had the opportunity to read works in old editions, for example "The Thousand and One Nights", and when I read it in a contemporary edition, I had to give up reading it.
With these works that I own of the "National Episodes", the magical epochal transportation of which I speak occurs. In each one of them one breathes the Spain of the years 1805 to 1880, the period covered by the episodes. There are passages that are really "lived". This is the case of the description of the atmosphere of a street (Rodas) and the character who enters it in a poor neighborhood of Madrid in 1850 in "Los duendes de la camarilla". It absorbs the reader in such a way that one is able to "see" every detail of the moment described. At least, that's how it happens to me.
There are many other examples to cite, but it is better to take another look at these episodes, and stop to evaluate, from our point of view, these classic works of Spanish literature.
And with other images of my books, and inviting you to read my previously published chronicles, I would like to invite you to take a look at them.
