Picture is mine

As an adult, I've grown to realize that some of our actions in the past are clearly meant for us to understand life better as we grow. They're meant to teach us a thing or two.

I recall that as a child growing up, my mum would make some decisions that, as a child, I would think she hated me or just wanted to punish me.

But then she'll say, "When you grow you'll understand better the reason I have to make some decisions"

It's not that she didn't love me, she did, but I just didn't understand.

Then, as I begin to mature, with puberty taking place, to adulthood, my mind and understanding get better. I realise that Mum only did all that stuff just for me to survive.

My hindsight becomes 20/20.

Because at this stage, looking back at some of those decisions, I realise it wasn't easy for Mum, but she was just trying to give me what we needed in the little way she could.

I recall sometime as a kid getting angry with Mum because she couldn't let me eat some of the foods that other kids of my age back then enjoyed. I cried, yelled and wondered if I was really loved at home. I was just a naive kid who wanted what others had. I wanted to feel among them; I wanted to taste what it was like to eat fries as much as some of my siblings did.

I could recall staring at my plates sometimes to see a few fries and many vegetables while my other siblings had many fries and few veggies.

Mum would always say, "Your health doesn't need much of these fries, please", as I cried, feeling like I wasn't loved the way my mother loved others.

Sometimes I'll hide to steal them and eat but it always comes with a repercussion. Either I end up sick or I'll react to it. But I still craved it because my tiny little kind didn't want to believe that I was allergic to some of these foods.

The first time I got my freedom and left the house. I decided to eat those foods that Mum couldn't give me as a child. But the more I ate them, the more I got sick. Then I began to compare my life as a kid when my mum made sure I avoided those foods and when I ate them in excess.

I came to realise that, truly, my body doesn't require any kind of food. And that mum did restrict me from eating all that junk out of love and not to punish me or because she didn't love me. I've come to realise that my body is built differently from others.

Now I say no to all those fries and even reject them when it's given to me on a platter of gold. And I can swear that my health has improved significantly in the past couple of years.

We never get to understand that some of the decisions our parents made while we were kids weren't to hurt us but maybe because they wanted the best for us or simply couldn't afford some of the things we craved.

But as we grow into adulthood it becomes clearer why the past had to be so. And why we couldn't get all that we wanted as kids.

Every in life is a lesson to learn
