Over time, poppy flowers have been a symbol of sleep, peace and death (sleep because opium extracted from poppies is a sedative, and death due to the bright red color of poppy flowers). In Greek and Roman myths, poppy flowers were used as offerings for the dead. In some historical periods, the image of poppy flowers appeared on tombstones to symbolize eternal sleep.
