My flock is small enough that I'm blessed to be able to hang out and observe the ladies' personalities. They have got some! Like all chickens, they love bugs! These three tend to be seen together...I guess they're the cool chicks! Saffron, Paisley and Feather.

It's Summer in Texas, and that means Cicadas. They chirp incessantly in the heat, warning us (like we don't know!) that it's hotter than Hades out there! The chickens particularly love these guys! They're a double treat goodie for the girls, as they do this strange molting thing, where they shed the previous shell...a good crunchy treat. And, once in a while, one will just fall out, in its original state.

When that happens, the chicken with the miraculous catching abilities will run around the yard, insect in mouth, making the cutest little "nyah, nyah" sound to all the chicks chasing her! It's worth standing out in the heat to see! Especially when there's an intercept, and the chase ensues in a different direction! It's like an old slapstick comedy!

Sometimes, we have to create our own Nirvana! When we set up the coop, we placed 4" x 4"'s along the base. Well, when ya water, eventually, dampness DOES happen, even here! And that means the perfect place for grubs and roly poly's (pill bugs) and millipedes and centipedes...all on the chicken list of favorite stuff to grub on. (Chicken joke! )
We have found the Motherlode! Whoop! whoop!

They move pretty quickly when there are grubs and such involved! Fortunately, today was only 102 out there!

It'll be a while before we do this side, again...gotta let the meals build up! But, there's always the other side! Just wanted to share some chicken funshine! Everyone have a Steemin' great day!
