Márluy, good morning. I have some news to tell you... these were the words of a neighbor of the place where I work when he arrived at my house at 10 o'clock in the morning... What came next was the beginning of an emotional roller coaster that culminated in generating between us an invisible bond that united us as a family...
The Chinese supermarket where I had been working until the night of the previous day, had dawned on fire....
They came looking for me to inform me and ask me to come and somehow help to start again. And of course I agreed without a second thought, even though they didn't like it at home.
I think that's when I also started an internal process of reconstruction after all the migratory mourning. Entering every day to a risk zone, recovering the merchandise that was not touched by the flames, watching the workers at work while we cleaned what we could with the little light and what the summer heat allowed us, marked my life completely.
My job in that place is to cut cold cuts, although progressively I got involved in everything, and I have known since I started working there, the daily procedure of the place; and it was a product of that unfortunate event, the beginning of digging forgotten physical and mental debris, which led me to a growth not only as a person, but also in my job.
Every day I came home as if I had just returned from a coal mine, with my hands full of soot, my clothes stained black and even once with my pants torn, because I had made a wrong move among debris and shelves that had been moved from their original place.
They were 15 long days of non-stop work, in which step by step we all recovered not only the store, but also our self-esteem after an event that could have been worse.
Just a couple of months later, the quarantine began due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which had already arrived in Argentina, being another emotional blow that put us again in check with respect to work.
Being a daily supply store, we never stopped working, we just had to adapt to the new reality that we had to live, and we also came out successful, and even stronger.
My frustration for not having a job in which I could practice the careers I had studied dissipated progressively, as my managerial skills became present, and the knowledge in corporate social responsibility as well.
Quietly I was sneaking into aspects that only they were in charge of, and when they saw the results, they were leaving me in charge.
Now they jokingly call me "The Manager" and I have achieved the trust that they had not placed in any other person who was not from the same origin.
Being from a different culture than the one I grew up in, there are many things that they do and think differently from me, but from which I have learned a lot both as a person and as a professional.
When the store burned down, they first preserved their lives, then assessed the losses and strategized. Standing idly by was never an option, and with the help of their community, they began to rebuild.
Talking to the owner, she told me: "We got into debt, but we had to do it, in order to move forward. Things in the mind are useless if they are not executed".
This does not mean that there is no room for recreation, but that something must be learned from everything that is done. Knowledge, even if it is not formal, never hurts.
Sometimes it bothers me when someone comes alone to buy something in small quantities, but they ask that I always attend them with the best disposition, because even if one day they buy little, they will always be a constant customer.
They live in the present, because the future is uncertain. So why put off until later what can be done at that moment?
You may be tired, but anything that can be advanced will always be one more step to reach the goal.
So this fact had no losses, on the contrary we have assimilated it as an event that led us to improve, to do things efficiently, to dig into what we see is not working for us and change it for the better.
