It is very common among parents the feeling of wanting their children to grow up quickly when they are babies, either because of the fatigue of routines every 3 hours, or because they want to recover a little independence and not have to be constantly attentive to a person who is experiencing every second.
But when they are two years old, perhaps a little more, the thoughts begin that time is flying, and that our baby is not so baby anymore as we would like it to be.
With the "two-year-old crisis" both them and us, we go through that transition of leaving behind many behaviors and actions typical of a baby, such as diapers, the bottle and we begin the stage of "I do it myself".
It is at that moment, when we as adults must take the lead and start giving him his space, but also behave according to what we are asking our children.
Asking them to start controlling sphincters, for example, while we continue talking to them as when they were babies, results quite confusing for both them and for those of us who see the situation from the outside.
One of my biggest impressions when we arrived in these southern lands was how the contemporary children behaved with my children, who still spoke with a language proper to younger infants.
Even, many people spoke like that to my younger child who was 3 years old by then, and with more than one I managed to make a senseless enmity, by asking them to please talk to him as a normal person, because he was able to understand without the need to use synonyms or the use of the suffix "ito / ita" at the end of each word.
It sounds pretentious for many that a child manifests himself against something he does not want, because socially they are not taken into account as individuals capable of having their own thoughts and ideas, and that they must blindly submit to the will of adults.
However, within their training as citizens, it is important not only to let them express themselves, even if their ideas are absurd or innocent, but also to encourage them to make decisions according to their age. And this also implies enriching their vocabulary and the correct pronunciation of the words.
And what does the title of the post have to do with it?
Well, we must take into account that inevitably children will grow up, even if we talk to them "little" or try to minimize their actions, ideas and initiatives.
Wanting to "lengthen" this stage, acting in this way, in my opinion is more harmful than beneficial, since it is during the first years of life when personality is shaped, so it should in any case, take advantage of all the potential of a being that comes to learn about life through us and everything we can provide.
More than trying to lengthen it, it is better to take advantage of it to the maximum, but not trying to keep them small, but sharing in their world taking our children / ourselves out, and feeling accompanied in the process of growing.
Is it convenient to lengthen childhood? Well, yes, but cultivating those inner children who motivate us to be happy adults and not delaying infants wanting to keep them in a stage that they have already burned: let's talk correctly, let's encourage reading, let's cultivate love for nature and art, and let them express themselves in their own way ...
... maybe one of their ideas will take the blindfold off our eyes and give us lights on a perspective that we would not have considered.
