Aprendiendo a tejer...o por lo menos intentando / Learning how to knit...or at least trying to.
Aunque algo sab铆a, pero no me arriesgaba a intentarlo.
Being able to make your own clothes is more than an art, it's a blessing, so the day I went to visit @dulce.crucita's house I asked her to refresh my knitting knowledge, to start making a sweater, although one thing is what you think and sometimes the result is the opposite.
During the first winter I lived in Argentina, the cold was getting to my bones, and I would see in the stores the displays of wool for knitting, and I regretted not having the knowledge to make something that would keep us warm, without the need to have so many pieces of clothing on top of us. I knew something, but I didn't risk trying.
Since I was a child, a friend of my mother's taught me to crochet, she is @rlathulerie's mother-in-law and she made (or still makes) beauties, so my mom asked her to initiate me in this art. With yarn and needle in hand, I spent some afternoons at her house, and I managed to make a centerpiece or two, always guided by her. The problem arose when I wanted to go ahead at home, because something happened and everything ended up as a small circular beanie.
I was so frustrated that I decided to leave it aside, and I dedicated all my effort to learn embroidery, an activity that has fascinated me since I was 9 years old, but I still had the problem of not mastering knitting.
Many years later, on a job I met Nilsa, another little spider who amazed me with the speed of her hands, a needle and lots of yarn. Talking with her over lunch, the subject came up, and my curiosity to learn to knit on two needles, to which she offered to teach me and of course I accepted without a second thought. I believed that by doing it with two needles, the effect of the hat would not be repeated and I would have the confidence to knit scarves, sweaters or any garment at will.
She lent me a pair of needles, but these are special because they are joined by a nylon, so as not to lose a stitch when the needle is filled almost from end to end. I put in the yarn, a huge skein I bought during my stay in Havana, where I knitted and unknit beanies to kill time.
We started the project to make a purse, she explained the beginning and then at home I would go ahead. She would make corrections after lunch, having to unknit on many occasions because I had skipped a stitch. I never thought she would be such a demanding teacher, but to learn you have to be humble and I did what she told me to do. But then my work contract ended and we stopped seeing each other. She left me the needles to finish the portfolio, 18 years later... the needles are still with me!
To be able to learn to knit well, is a pending subject that I have failed in Los Teques, Caracas, Havana and now I am trying again in the Argentina chapter. Now maybe my brain does want to understand the art of knitting, with one needle, with two needles or with chopsticks, but it is something that is already on my list of things to do before I die.
So I took the needles with me and asked Crucita to explain it to me. Everything started well, I managed to tie the first knot and move forward, but while I was doing it we were talking until she saw what I was doing, her face said it all!
I literally became a tangled mess of yarn as I listened to the explanations of what I shouldn't have done. In fact, I earned the misconduct hat, and it was barely my first class. So I think I'd better use the needles to hold up my hair, while I ask the GPT chat to explain how to read a crochet without dying trying.
P.S. This story is half fact, half fiction. When I really feel mentally capable of knitting, I'm sure @dulce.crucita will have all the patience to teach me the tricks to not lose stitches or crochet beanies.
