Is vegemite that bad?

What’s a vegemite? Apparently it's an Australian spread that people seem to find it weird. I watched countless videos of people trying vegemite for the first time and I finally got the chance to try it. I guess now I understand why it may taste strange or smell weird for some people.

Before my departure, I stopped by a coffee place offering bread and breakfast menu inside the airport. The dishes were mostly costly but after browsing the cheapest option I can find, apparently they sell toast with various choices of jams and vegemite was on the list. I did not hesitate to try it just because I was curious about it. What could go wrong with Vegemite, right?

Worse case, I could just eat lightly buttered plain bread. So, there I was, without hesitation, one vegemite please!

What does Vegemite taste like for me?

I heard varied responses before but my responses would be that it smells and tastes like Indonesian petis.

Petis is a shrimp paste over here and vegemite smells and tastes slightly like that. It was definitely savory and I didn’t find it bad at all, in fact I quite like it. It’s not because I was starved or anything. I really enjoyed the savory taste as I am used to eating Petis that smell and taste similar. Spreading vegemite on toast tastes just right. The first time I did was dipping my ciabbata to the vegemite but I found out a better way of eating it by spreading a little bit on top of the bread.

The place gave me plenty of vegemite and I was actually curious if they taste good when combined with chili. Have you guys ever tried that combination? Or is that some sort of vegemite blasphemy?

Anyway, I wasn’t really expecting I’d enjoy Vegemite. It was one of those moment you never know if you never tried. Maybe you won’t like vegemite but maybe you will. Actually it wasn't that bad at all and I would eat something like that more often when I can 🤣
