High Class K-Drama Review - Jeju's Elite & Intrigue

It has been a while since I have written a series review. The truth is, while I’ve been watching all of it, I feel a little less compelled to write about it. Lately, the series I am watching is mostly Chinese Drama with a few Korean series on the side. I think these series don’t really have that many audiences outside the APAC region. So, that’s also another reason why I don’t really review them anymore BUT there’s one Korean series that I recently watched and captured my attention.

This series can be classified into Makjang, an over the top story containing multiple plot twists and almost too good to be true/believable. It’s about the 0.01% of people in South Korea and their life’s intrigue called the High Class. I came to know this series a long time ago when I was still a subscriber to VIU. I thought it was a horror movie so that’s why I skipped it. At the same time, during those years, such drama gained popularity too. There are some dramas like Penthouse and Sky Castle that are similar to High Class.

High Class, while carrying a similar plot, is set on picturesque Jeju island. It has some contrasting settings that are mostly set in ultra urbanized society like Seoul. Setting in Jeju, the people there are mostly hotel owners, local politicians as well as celebrities who also owned the restaurants. The characters that are presented in the movie were a little more foreign compared to the one set in Seoul.

Much like similar drama, it was also showing one woman’s fight against her society and her surroundings. It was showing how tough a single mother can be dealing with whatever problems throws at them. At the same time, the socialites character also shows that their lives were all smoke and mirrors. There are ugliness behind their attempt to showcase what a perfect and successful life should be.

Starred by Cho Yeo-Jeong, this series has its own appeal. She is known for the woman in the award winning story, parasite. The other actors and actresses are also quite well-known in K-drama. If you are a fan of Cho Yeo-Jong, this is one of her best works and a way to get to know her more.

Would I really recommend this k-drama? well perhaps but if you don’t enjoy makjang stories, it’s best to save 16 hours of your time to watch another korean series/film.
