I’ve been wanting to watch a K-drama for a really long time to see if they’re really as good as people say they are. To be honest, I tried a long time ago with a series called “Love Alarm,” and it made me cringe so much—I didn’t like it at all. I feel like people in Korean series generally act as if they’re in a cartoon, and that really bothers me. Anyway, I recently ran out of things to watch, so I decided to look for a series and committed to watching it all the way through even if I didn’t like it. After a long search and watching several trailers, I found “Marry My Husband.” It seemed pretty interesting, so I wanted to give it a chance.
Honestly, I could never remember any of the characters' names—those Korean names are super hard for me… so a lot of the time I’d get lost in the dialogue when they were talking about someone who wasn’t there. The story of this K-drama begins by introducing us to this girl who has terminal cancer; she’s married to a guy who’s basically a jerk, but she always leans on her best friend from childhood, who’s always there for her unconditionally. One day, she realizes that her husband is cheating on her with her best friend—and not only that, but they’re also planning to profit from her death through a life insurance policy. She confronts them and ends up being murdered by her husband, but the story doesn’t end there, since she magically travels back in time 10 years, where she’ll have the chance to do things differently and change her fate.
At first, I didn't think it was good or bad; in fact, I even got to a point where I found it interesting. The further I got into the story, the more hooked I became—especially when we discovered the truth about the male lead in this series, but then it started to go downhill (at least for me). It turned into a really tedious and drawn-out series, even though it only has 16 episodes and I was watching one a day. I’m telling you this because I’m usually someone who loves watching long Turkish series with over 200 episodes and can watch more than 10 in a single day
But I guess it’s just my personal taste that keeps me from appreciating Korean series beyond Squid Game, which I really love (except for the last season). It’s just that I find the acting pretty boring—the expressions are very flat, the situations are too unrealistic, and the slow-motion shots are really, REALLY awful. Sometimes I even felt like I was watching a Bollywood movie. Plus, the women act pretty weird—very “girlish,” pouting and stuff like that. I really don’t like that, and that’s just a cultural thing…
I think the story has potential if it had been executed better; at least I didn't like it that much. It felt like the longest 16 days of my life every time I watched an episode. It felt like it took me months to finish this series, and once again I realize that K-dramas aren't my thing, although I still haven't ruled out giving another series a chance, but I need more DRAMA, MORE EMOTION, and characters I can really connect with—not ones that seem like robots.
