I have an outing scheduled for the end of the month to celebrate Samhain—or the Celtic New Year. This is the time when spirits and the souls of the deceased connect most easily with our reality, and when paranormal phenomena are said to be more likely to occur. I’ll be celebrating with a group of friends, and we’re holding a costume contest. The rules require the costume to be based on a scary character, spirit, or entity—whether from mythology or literature. My initial idea involves dark colors, a metallic mask, and a garment like a black faux-fur coat. I drew some inspiration from Pinterest; while I haven't settled on a specific character yet, I remembered one from American Horror Story who wore a tight leather suit—looking like a masochistic fetishist—which was very unsettling. I also recalled the zombie warriors from the icy regions in Game of Thrones. However, if I were to describe the character I’ve designed myself, he would be a dark, refined, and sadistic warrior-knight with an urban look that blends contemporary and futuristic styles. His power lies in projecting illusions and inducing fear within dreams, eventually manifesting in his victim's reality to claim their soul.
I might end up doing something different with the costume later on, since I haven't managed to align it with any specific literary work or mythology; still, I have a solid foundation for what I want and can adapt it as needed.
PROCESS
To start developing my concept, I searched Pexels for an image of a slender person wearing black clothing—someone with a build similar to mine and wearing the kind of clothes I might have at home.
I went into Gemini and modified the image so that the dark-painted face was wearing a black balaclava.
Continuing with Gemini, I incorporated black paint on the skin of the arms and hands, as well as a white background to make it easy to cut out the character, plus the furry scarf.
To add texture and gold color, I found these gold sheets on Pexels by kaboompics.com; I will use this for the character's clothing and mask.
For the design process, I opened Photoshop and removed the white background from the character I had started developing in Gemini; I then placed a dark background to begin making the edits I wanted.
Using the mouse and the free-form selection tool, I experimented and sketched out the shape of the mask, then filled it with white.
I followed the same process for the bracelet and rings; I applied layer effects to give them volume and a gold color, which I sampled from an image of gold leaves.
I created the belt buckle using the same technique and began experimenting by layering highlights and shadows onto the image.
I applied the gold texture to the skin of the arm and enhanced the golden highlights; using Photoshop brushes, I created background textures and experimented with layer settings.
To finish, I developed textures in Photoshop to overlay onto the artwork, giving it a more interesting finish—at least in my view. I also added layers to adjust the colors and make the costume's concept art more visually appealing.
Sequence
I hope you liked my costume idea for the end of October; the Photoshop process was really straightforward, and I was pleased with the result—it seems like a great tool to use.
