What would you do, if you walked in, and found your lover in bed with someone else?
I've been asked crazy questions like that, in the past. And for the life of the conversation, I say what I think I would do, like, I'll kill them both, or I'll kill just my lover. But now that I think about it, I've discovered that, I don't know what I would do. How about you? Do you? Really?
One of my favorite quotes in the world, describes the volatility of humans and life at large. It says
"You think you know me, but I'm changing every time."
The statement is supposedly directed at someone else, but if you look closely, it comes home to you too. Do you realize that in the course of our lives, we change without even knowing that we have, or are changing. It usually takes an external body, or an event, to bring you up to speed.
I've heard people say that they know someone like the back of their palm, probably their spouse, or sister, or friends. And I mull over how wrong they are. They don't even know themselves, like the back of their palms, let alone someone else.
Sometimes we try to take control of ourselves, we train our minds, and our bodies, we try to teach restraint, and then we think we have it. But when shit hits the fan, we watch it all crumble.
My Dad used to tell me me when I was a boy, that I should behave rightly, so that in the case of an event where I was accused of something, he could beat his chest and tell whoever, that his son didn't do it. I knew the notion was wrong, but then I figured out later that, it is a primal instinct for humans to defend their own. Protect first, Ask questions later.
Someone could get married to another for forty years even, as sacred an institution, as marriage is. They could live together for that long, sleep in the same bed, even fight wars together, and then one party does something that breaks the other, and it hits home. Then you hear those words, "I thought I knew you." well, you didn't.
When it comes down to it, Do you really know anyone?
