I don't know if it's just me, but I've been wrong about people more times than I'd like to admit.
Growing up, I used to believe that you could tell what someone was like the moment you met them. If they smiled a lot, they were friendly. If they hardly talked, I assumed they were proud or didn't want to associate with anyone. It sounded reasonable at the time, until life proved me wrong.
One experience still sticks with me. I met someone who barely spoke whenever we crossed paths. Every greeting was short, and I honestly thought the person just didn't like me. Months later, we ended up working together on something, and I discovered she was actually one of the calmest and kindest people I had ever met. She wasn't rude at all, she was simply shy and took time to warm up to people.
That experience made me realise how quickly our minds fill in the blanks.
These days, it happens even faster because of social media. We scroll through someone's profile for a few seconds and suddenly feel like we know them. We assume they are happy because they sre always smiling in pictures. We think someone is doing well because they travel often or post nice outfits. But who really knows what is happening once the camera is off?
I've also wondered how many people have judged me without knowing me. Maybe they have thought I was too quiet, too serious, or even unfriendly. The funny thing is, I'm sometimes just observing my surroundings or thinking about something completely unrelated. If someone judged me in that moment, they would probably get it wrong.
I'm not saying first impressions don't matter at all. Sometimes our instincts can protect us, and there are situations where paying attention to them is important. But I also think we should leave a little room for people to surprise us.
I've made some really good friends in places I least expected. If I'd held on to my first impression of them, we probably wouldn't even be talking today. Looking back now, I'm glad I gave those friendships a chance.
Have you ever met someone you didn't really like at first, but later became close to? Or has someone ever told you that they completely misunderstood you when they first met you?
Thank for checking on my post and have a wonderful day
