El abuelo / The grandfather

La vida siguió
transitando sus mismos
callejones y nunca logró
emparedar
sus sueños muertos.
Ya no importaba,
eran muertos que cantaban.

Hallaron morada
en las hojas escritas,
en el rasguño azul
de sus mediodías.

Su alma tenía ventanas
y podías verlo
fácilmente en sus barrios calcinados
a través de despedidas
que nunca callaron,
corriendo sinuosas venas
de océanos remotos.

Había dejado que el corazón
supiese de memoria
las estrategias del viento,
la plenitud de las alas.

Tal era el vuelo que lo segregó
de mis tibias manos...
seducido por la dicha
de un inevitable ensueño.

Life continued
to traverse its same
alleys and never managed
to wall up
its dead dreams.
It no longer mattered,
they were dead dreams that sang.

They found a dwelling
in the written pages,
in the blue scratch
of their noons.

His soul had windows
and you could see him
easily in his burnt-out neighborhoods
through farewells
that never fell silent,
running sinuous veins
of remote oceans.

He had let his heart
know by heart
the strategies of the wind,
the fullness of the wings.

Such was his flight that it separated him
from my tepid hands...
seduced by the joy
of an inevitable dream.
