The Mediterranean Steps is a steep hike, the trek starts beside Jews Gate Cemetery and leads south through zig zag and narrow paths bordering along the edge of cliffs, whilst looking out at North Africa.
As you carry along the path you start to ascend a steep flight of steps that lead to Goat’s Hair Twin Caves which were once at sea level. As you work your way up you'll pass pre war tunnels, old pumping stations & multiple caves.
One of my favourite things about this path is the silence from everyday life with echo of wildlife bursting in and out.
The challenge REALLY kicks in as you start to approach the summit. The stairs become uneven and you almost have climb up the broken stone. I at points use my hands to steady myself out where the height gets a bit much for me...
Once reaching the top you feel such a great level of satisfaction, achievement & pride.
In the upper area of the rock you have multiple tourist attractions, such as St Michael Cave, WW2 caves and many cannons. One of the most popular reasons tourists like to do the rock is to see the Barbary macaques. These monkeys actually surround and live at the top of the rock. They are known to steal food, jump on your back and be playful, however can also be aggressive.
I once found myself on the Med Steps in the middle of a monkey fight, they stole my water bottle and I don't think I have ever run to the top of the rock so fast...
Legend says, so long as the monkeys live on the Rock, so too will the British have control.
Hope you've enjoyed my trip
