I try to relate my current thoughts to how it were coming up and is hilarious because just like me, when most people think about scientific discovery, they imagine hardworking researchers staying up late in their laboratories, wearing lab coats and trying to find answers to some of the world’s biggest problems. They might be trying to cure rare diseases, discover cleaner sources of energy, or simply learn more about how the world works. We are often taught to see science as an open and noble search for truth, where the best ideas get recognized and people work together to solve humanity’s biggest challenges.
But if you actually talk to a scientist who works in research, you quickly realize that modern scientific research is often stuck in a complicated and frustrating system. Here is how the traditional system usually works. Ordinary taxpayers provide money for basic scientific research through government grants. Scientists then spend months carrying out experiments, studying their results, and writing academic papers about what they discovered. Those same scientists may also review other scientists’ papers for free as part of the peer-review process.
After all that work, commercial academic publishers take the research, claim exclusive rights to it, and put it behind expensive online paywalls. Sometimes, reading just one research paper can cost $35–$50 or even more.
This means that if a doctor, independent researcher, or even a patient dealing with a long-term illness wants to read research that was partly paid for with their own tax money, they may have to pay a large amount of money to access it. At the same time, university researchers can spend a huge amount of their research time dealing with grant applications and administrative paperwork instead of actually doing research.
There is also another major problem called the Valley of Death. This is the gap between an early scientific discovery and actually turning that discovery into something useful, such as a medical treatment. Some promising discoveries never make it through this stage because they are considered too risky or too early for government funding, while they are not yet profitable enough to attract large pharmaceutical companies.
