Today was the most family day we've had of the holiday season. As far as my wife's family are concerned, I do something (to do with computers) and I get most of my earnings in bitcoin. This isn't quite true of course, but it's more accurate than, say 20 years ago when people just knew that I did something to do with computers.

So at every family gathering (perhaps yours are similar!) I'm the crypto guy that everyone wants to test out their knowledge and theories on.

My general line with them is that, yes it's been a tough year, but no crypto isn't "over". I think it's getting more interesting right now, not just because prices seem to be turning upward but also because the smart contract world is really starting to touch the real world although the regulation of what's going on is still a long game. I think they're still struggling with what is the actual difference between bitcoin and ethereum so telling them that there are now mutually owned casinos where people are chucking around large amounts of money, mainly because it's just made-up internet money that feels worthless right now, kinda blew their minds. Also hot on the (not necessarily crypto) agenda was WeChat, that's grabbed their attention too, I think because it mixes up lots of the things that they know and puts them in one inscrutable Chinese package.

Anyway they still think I'm cool for being able to talk about this stuff from experience rather than the theoretical ponderings I think they get down the pub.
