We've had our fill of damaging rain and buildings being bulldozed by mudslides, and then the sun came out!
So we asked our special arty-farty friends, @artywink's term, and her hubby Peter to join us on a long walk along the new section of the promenade that's been extended to the harbour entrance.
Not only was the sun shining, but it was also my b'day and we were going to make the most of it! There really is nothing as soothing as the sounds of the waves breaking on the shore, and where we ended up having lunch, one could not even hear any traffic. The city centre was just around the corner, so it is really finding a place like this.
I must add though, that this is teeming with people over weekends and holidays; one of the benefits of being a semi-retired Silver Blogger means we can take a break when the crowds are at the office!
The people of Kwazulu Natal are still in shock at experiencing two destructive storms in a space of around five weeks apart, and it's just been doom and gloom; even right on our doorstep!
The sight of the road in front of our neighbour's home greets us every time we walk up the stairs, and it's a little worse after the second deluge this weekend!
We landed up behind one of our army trucks on the road; this time they are not fighting a war; they're here to help the emergency services!
But enough doom and gloom, the storm is over and today we will be having fun and join @tattoodjay's Wednesday Walk, and
@elizacheng's #makemesmile, by walking the long promenade and at the same time work up an appetite as it was getting close to lunchtime.
There were many restaurants along the way tempting one to stop and not do the long walk!
First up is the Cargo Hold, a ship-like structure that is permanently moored outside Ushaka Marine World and houses restaurants where one can 'dine with the sharks', as one of the walls offers a view into a shark tank or just enjoy the view of the Indian Ocean.
The Ku-D-La-Pier is situated at the end of a pier, normally with the ocean around it but it was low-tide. That's not where we were heading so still had a lot of walking to do!
A sand artist with a sense of humour.
The long road to the Point was beckoning.
We could have hired a bike or a pedal go-kart, but look who's riding the bikes and who's riding the go-karts? The oldies definitely look fit and are showing the young ones a thing or two!
The harbour was not as busy as always, and we wondered if it had anything to do with the storms. We did see some ships coming in with the powerful tug boats there to guide them. The captain is fetched by helicopter and a marine pilot is dropped off to guide the vessels safely into the harbour.
By now we were really starving, and reached our final destination, The Point Yacht Club, that was recently moved, rebuilt and revamped with new decor. The members now have a view of the ocean and not the harbour, and I think this really is a much better site.
We decided to sit outdoors and make the most of the glorious weather. We all ended up ordering the same special - Prawns, Calamari & Chips, and it was absolutely yum! They would not tell us how they manage to tenderize their calamari, as it really was the best I have tasted!
This was a great walk, plus we then had to walk all the way back to the car again which helped getting the digestive juices going.
A lovely walk which I highly recommend to any of my fellow Durbanites!
