In the present timeline

Old Doctor

Now look it here, buster, somehow we broke this timeline, and we’re gonna put it right. Is it complicated? You damn right it is. It’s time travel not rocket science. Different principles. More difficult and mind-bending. Look at the situation we’re in. Causality has broken down or maybe it was broken already, and we’re just beginning to notice. Now we can get all fancy and talk about this and that and multiple string dimensions and so on and so forth, and that won’t make a lick of difference in bringing Gala Connor back into this timeline, so we can finally fix this messy business.

Ten millions years ago in the Trappist-1 system

Later that evening…

Meanwhile, somewhere in time

Dr. Pascal

I know that tomorrow you will not be here, Gala. The bifurcations are rendering faster. By morning, we'll be gone into another dimension. But believe me when I tell you, we have met before. We have laughed, cried, and loved before. In that distant future that is already our past.

Gala Connor

I don’t know what to believe! All this talk of time travel and dimensions, it’s really disconcerting. Now, here you show up with pictures of those horrible creatures you call humans and tell me I’m one of them. I look nothing like those creatures! They don’t even have any wings or antennae!

... and what if he's right? If I'm some alien creature from another time, bound to this plane by some random causal asymmetry...

In a timespace far far away…

The Seer

Makes no sense, does it? No need to worry. It’s all under control. The machinery of time is in motion and well oiled, believe you me. Every hour, minute, second, nanosecond, ad infinitum has been accounted for in the ledgers. For now, you can sit back, relax and enjoy. In time, all these fragments will come together like a beautiful tapestry. Then you will be amazed, and you will rejoice in the knowledge that everything is perfect just the way it is. And tasty, very very tasty.

The cover image was generated by litguru@litguru in DreamStudio. I tried to convey a comic-like aesthetic. This is the reason why this story is fragmented. I tried to match the narrative to the collage-like nature of the image. Thank you for reading.
