The man on the street reaches inside his coat pocket and fishes out a card.
“Don’t be afraid,” he says. “We’re on the same team.”
I don’t understand.
“We both want the same thing. A successful merger.”
He raises the card. The eye in the pyramid.
“These are the terms.”
The eye flashes.
A new reality floods. Aquamarine memories. I find myself swimming sleekly through underwater currents.
“Pull yourself together, Floyd.” A distant and familiar voice.
I emit high-pitched sonar bullets that travel in slow motion through the medium.
The man vanishes.
“Very good,” she says. "You're a fast learner. Don't trust anyone in this city. It's heart is more devious than you think."
"Who's heart?"
“Answer me. What am I doing here?”
She looks up as long tentacles slither out of skyscrapers, and reach towards her. She manages to evade them with a swift slap of her tail, and then she disappears in the coral alleys.
Instinct takes over me.
I swim towards the light.
I run away from darkness.
