Hola, melómanos. Hoy les traigo tres versiones de canciones legendarias, inmortalizadas por músicos que figuran en el firmamento como grandes estrellas de todos los tiempos. La primera es "Unforgettable", interpretada por un maravilloso trío ad hoc conformado por el multipremiado pianista cubano Gonzalo Rubalcaba —que hizo carrera desde muy temprano en Estados Unidos— y dos jóvenes saxofonistas que también provienen de esa fuente inagotable de buenos músicos que es esta Isla. "Unforgettable" es una composición original de Irving Gordon, que todos recordamos en la inolvidable voz de Nat King Cole. Rubalcaba, junto a Yainer Horta y Joey Calveiro, la incluyó en su álbum más reciente, titulado "A Tribute to Benny Moré and Nat King Cole", que resultó ganador de la edición más reciente de los premios Grammy como mejor álbum de jazz latino —por cierto, en dura pugna con otras ofertas de gran valor entregadas por monstruos como Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo O'Farrill, Miguel Zenón y Pedrito Martínez.

Hello music lovers. Today I bring you three covers of legendary songs, immortalized by musicians who stand in the firmament as all-time greats. The first is "Unforgettable," performed by a marvelous ad hoc trio made up of the multi-award-winning Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba —who built his career in the United States from a very young age— and two young saxophonists who also come from that inexhaustible source of excellent musicians that is this Island. "Unforgettable" is an original composition by Irving Gordon, which we all remember in the unforgettable voice of Nat King Cole. Rubalcaba, together with Yainer Horta and Joey Calveiro, included it on his most recent album, titled "A Tribute to Benny Moré and Nat King Cole," which won the most recent edition of the Grammy Awards for Best Latin Jazz Album —incidentally, in tough competition with other offerings of great value delivered by monsters like Paquito D'Rivera, Arturo O'Farrill, Miguel Zenón, and Pedrito Martínez.
La segunda propuesta es "Tin Tin Deo", un clásico del jazz de 1948, acreditado originalmente al maestro tamborero cubano Chano Pozo —fuente de toda verdad— y Gil Fuller, y llevado a la gloria por Dizzy Gillespie. La versión corre a cuenta del excepcional trompetista cubano Arturo Sandoval, deudor eterno de su mentor Gillespie, durante el International Jazz Day del año pasado celebrado en Abu Dhabi. Por algún tiempo mantuve comunicación con el maestro Sandoval —para muchos el mejor trompetista del mundo—, pero su cerrazón en materia política cortó el diálogo. En todo caso, el buen arte no se discute, y aquí les va esta pequeña y reciente muestra de su talento inagotable.

The second offering is "Tin Tin Deo," a jazz classic from 1948, originally credited to the Cuban master drummer Chano Pozo —source of all truth— and Gil Fuller, and carried to glory by Dizzy Gillespie. This version comes courtesy of the exceptional Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, eternal debtor to his mentor Gillespie, during last year's International Jazz Day held in Abu Dhabi. For a while I communicated fairly amiably with maestro Sandoval—for many, the best trumpeter in the world—but his closed-mindedness on political matters cut the dialogue short. In any case, good art is beyond dispute, and here is this small and recent sample of his inexhaustible talent.
El tercer y último tune es "I Wish", compuesto e interpretado originalmente por esa historia viva que es Stevie Wonder. Este es un cover muy fresco y explosivo imaginado por el todavía joven pianista cubano Alfredo Rodríguez —habitual en mis propuestas—, y ejecutado por un dream team que integran la inefable vocalista Alana Sinkëy, el baterista Michael Olivera, el bajista Yarel Hernández y el master drummer Pedrito Martínez. Con esto me despido hasta la próxima edición del Three Tunes Tuesday.

The third and final tune is "I Wish," composed and originally performed by that living history that is Stevie Wonder. This is a very fresh and explosive cover imagined by the still-young Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodríguez —a regular in my posts—, and performed by a dream team made up of the ineffable vocalist Alana Sinkëy, drummer Michael Olivera, bassist Yarel Hernández, and master drummer Pedrito Martínez. With it I bid you farewell until the next edition of Three Tunes Tuesday.
