Una banda que representa una muy entrañable época de mi infancia y preadolescencia.
Estamos hablando de Simple Plan, una banda canadiense formada a finales de los años 90 y que rápidamente se hizo popular a principios de los 2000 con el lanzamiento de su primer álbum debut. Su sonido tan particular identificado como Pop-Punk y Pop-Rock lo hizo labrarse un nombre en toda una generación, mi generación. En aquel entonces incluso se llegó a comparar con otras bandas de Pop/Punk como Blink-182 del cual hemos hablado en un pasado. Pero actualmente es de las pocas bandas de este estilo que ha logrado superar la barrera del tiempo gracias a ciertas tendencias y el auge de las redes sociales.

Aside from being the band’s debut single, it’s a song that gained popularity decades after its release in the early 2000s thanks to TikTok—that’s right. That’s how I was able to rediscover this great band after so many years.
“I’m Just A Kid” is a song that speaks to the loneliness experienced by someone during adolescence—a pivotal stage in a person’s life, marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. I'm Just A Kid es una canción que nos habla de la soledad que vive alguien en su adolescencia, una etapa muy clave en la vida del ser humano al ser la transición de todo el mundo de la niñez a la adultez. La letra de la canción nos describe el estado físico, social y emocional que posee el protagonista quien dice encontrarse solo, desde que se despierta a las 7 de la mañana “y espero hasta las 11” solo para ver que no hay nadie a su lado para llamarlo. También nos dice que, a pesar de tener “muchos amigos” no sabe nada de ellos y pasa todas las noches solo mientras “el mundo se divierte más” que él.
Es irónico que está canción, que prácticamente nos habla de la soledad que uno ha llegado a vivir en su adolescencia debido a no empatizar o ser parte de algún grupo social en la escuela o en cualquier parte, se sienta tan nostálgico y tan entrañable. Es como si extrañáramos nuestras vidas de adolescentes, como si hubieran sido las mejores épocas de nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, esta conclusión la tiene rápidamente la mayoría al comparar su adolescencia con sus vidas actuales repletas de responsabilidades, sufrimientos y decepciones.

Nowadays, when I listen to it, I can’t help but remember that era and all those moments I experienced when I used to listen to this song from time to time. Perfect is the fourth and final single from their debut album, No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls (2002). The song has become one of my favorites by this band, not just because it was one of the few I had on my playlist to listen to when I was a teenager.
The lyrics of Perfect tell us about the emotions and thoughts of a young man trying to talk to his father, asking him and pleading with him to forgive him for not living up to all his expectations and for “not being perfect.” The latter is something that is repeated in the chorus as a way of expressing the idealized, dreamlike image the father has of his son—who, in reality, is nothing like he imagines him to be. His decisions and disapproval have driven the two apart to the point where “it’s too late” and there’s nothing left to do but for each to move on with their lives.
It’s interesting that I remember this song with nostalgia, as a depressing and emotional song and all that. While its lyrics do convey those emotions, the ultimate message is more than just the declaration of a rebellious young man seeking to be accepted just as he is. In reality, the song’s core message is that we don’t have to be “perfect” or be what others want us to be—we should just keep being ourselves. It’s sad when someone close to us doesn’t approve of us or ends up disappointed; I understand that perfectly. But no one has the right to decide who we are.
Sigamos con otra gran canción de Simple Plan, otro sencillo que marcó a toda una generación con su sonido y su letra toda melancólica y repleta de sentimientos. Actualmente cuando la escucho me es imposible no recordar aquella época y todos esos momentos que he vivido cuando solía escuchar esta canción de vez en cuando. Perfect es el cuarto y último sencillo del álbum debut conocido como No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls (2002). La canción se ha vuelto una de mis favoritas de esta banda, no solo porque era de las pocas que tenía en mi Playlist para escuchar cuando era adolescente.
La letra de Perfect nos habla de las emociones y pensamientos que tiene un joven que intenta hablar con su padre preguntándole y pidiéndole que lo perdone por no cumplir con todas sus expectativas y por “no ser perfecto”. Esto último es algo que se repite en el coro como una forma de expresión que describe esa imagen ideal y soñada que tiene el padre con su hijo, quien en realidad no es para nada como él se imagina que es. Sus decisiones y sus desaprobaciones han distanciado a los dos hasta llegar a tal punto en el que “ya es tarde” y que no se puede hacer nada más que seguir cada quien adelante.
Es interesante que esta canción la recuerde con nostalgia, como una canción depresiva y emotiva y todo eso. Si bien su letra posee dichas emociones, el mensaje del final es menos que solo la declaración de un joven rebelde que busca ser aceptado tal y como es. En realidad el mensaje inicial de esta canción es que no tenemos que ser “perfectos” y ser lo que los demás quieren que seamos, sino seguir siendo nosotros mismos. Es triste cuando alguien de nuestro círculo cercano no nos aprueba o terminan decepcionados, lo entiendo perfectamente. Pero nadie tiene la potestad de decidir quiénes somos.

Simple Plan is remembered as a band that has managed to maintain a style that’s pure and true to what we’ve come to know as Pop-Punk, and this song is a testament to that. “Welcome To My Life” is the first single from the band’s second studio album, Still Not Getting Any… (2004). This song is another anthem for a generation of teenagers from that era—and now that we’re all adults, we listen to its Punk rhythm with nostalgia.
“Welcome To My Life” tells the story of the marginalized life of a teenager who feels alone, hurt, and disappointed with life. What’s interesting about this song is that the lyrics contain moments of sarcasm, such as the questions posed at the beginning, for example. It’s a song that perfectly captures how those who are cast aside, rejected, and marginalized by a prejudiced, superficial, and demanding society feel.

Lo curioso de esta canción es que dicha letra posee partes que denotan sarcasmos, como lo son las preguntas que nos hacen al principio, por ejemplo. Es una canción que representa muy bien cómo se sienten aquellos que son apartados, rechazados y marginados de una sociedad, una sociedad prejuiciosa, superficial y exigente.
