We walked around Old Havana on the last day of the Meeting of Young Writers of Ibero-America in this 31st Edition of the Havana International Book Fair (February 2023), saying goodbye to the event in our own way, the only way in which a young person can eat the world: embracing everything in its path in a sack city, which hangs on the shoulder of an older man, with the face of a good person.
If we don't walk about 10 km that Saturday, either separately or together, then, we don't walk at all. We talked and time slipped away in some corner of the bag, the happy old man let us be. We go from Café to Café as from book to book. We debate prizes and bluffs while abusing the good prices at O'RELLY, where perhaps we would never have left. A boy in the Plaza Vieja approached me with a paper origami flower in exchange for whatever I wanted. Maybe I should have paid him with a kiss, hugged him with all the love in the world, that was going to fill him more than a few bills.
All the streets look alike. One is identical to the other, and the other to the one above. I never found out where the Eye of the Cyclone appeared. If I were to go solo again, I don't think I would run into the place.
"Tango for free", said the poster where an open gate left the back of a Polski on the front page, redesigned in the "rockanrolezco" style. Meanwhile, the old Jodorowsky made his words struggle from a television embedded in the wall, acclimating us to the various ornaments that seemed to come to life along the way. A bundle of cotton hung from the ceiling, simulating clouds around flying suitcases, photographs and paintings, all as an organic part of an installation whose objective seemed to be no other than to transport us to the most harmonious stream of which I can remember.
John Lennon never imagined carrying a body as multifunctional as the one he was awarded there, leaving his head as if it were something completely synchronous, a pose that I never understand when I see the statue, because if something could not be blamed on that skinny man with round glasses it is normal (understood a-normal by the divine).
A couple were playing foosball towards a corner, focused, as if no one else was walking around, the pattern of what to me was the hint of a chemical molecule enveloping them. A revolving, flared object served as a stirrup for pairless high-heeled shoes. All covered with books. Marxist Philosophy, Political Culture, Religion and Society, among other joyful titles. Orus's eye watched us from a column. Three pieces of masonry, torn from God knows where (the eye of the cyclone must always be a powerful force), exposed the anatomy of a body, as if we were witnesses to an autopsy, it seemed to me the body of a woman. Inside, only one object seemed familiar to me: "a cup of coffee." Surely a chronic ulcer was the cause of death (I answer assuming that I am an expert in the opinion of the macro results).
Martyrs on the back wall.
Eusebio Leal, stunned, is transfigured into the atmospheric phenomenon of his beloved Old Havana.
