Yo tenía 7 años y estaba aprendiendo a tejer.

The needle that always goes with me

At first, I wasn't really sure what object I could choose for this initiative. I thought about several things, trying to find something that truly represented me and not simply an object that I liked. After thinking about it for a long time, I realized that the best object I could choose was something that probably wouldn't seem special to anyone else: a crochet hook.
This crochet hook has a rather funny story, because I didn't actually choose it. When I was 7 years old, I was learning how to crochet with my mom. She had several crochet hooks because she likes to crochet and, like any good mom, she tried to teach me what she knew. Among those hooks, there was one that ended up in my hands in a rather unexpected way.
My great-grandfather was walking down the street and found a crochet hook. I don't know exactly where he found it or why he decided to pick it up, but he did, and later he gave it to me. From that moment on, that crochet hook became my crochet hook.

It may seem like a very simple story, but the funny thing is that many years have passed and I still have it. It is also still one of the tools I use the most when I crochet.
The funniest part is that this is a size 0 hook. For those who know a little about crochet, you probably know that it isn't exactly the hook you would choose for every kind of project. However, I have ended up making practically everything with it, without really caring what type of yarn I had in front of me.
With that same hook, I have made bags, clothing, different crafts, and even amigurumis. Some projects have been easy, while others have made me wonder more than once why I decided to make things so complicated for myself. But I always end up trying to find a way to do it.
And I think that's precisely why this crochet hook ended up representing me so much.
Not because it is the best hook I have, nor because it is the prettiest or the most suitable for every project. Most of the time, it would probably be much more practical to use another one. But it is the hook I learned with, the one that was with me when I was only 7 years old and discovering that I could create things with my own hands.
When I think about that little girl, it makes me smile to imagine her trying to learn how to crochet. Surely many things didn't turn out well, and she probably had to undo what she had made more than once. But she kept learning. And without realizing it, she was beginning a relationship with crafts that, many years later, is still part of her life.
I think objects can also hold different stages of who we are. Sometimes we don't need to keep big things to remember who we were. It can be a small crochet hook, a photograph, a book, or any everyday object that was present during a certain moment and that, over the years, ended up acquiring a different meaning.
For me, this crochet hook represents creativity, but also learning and perseverance. It reminds me that we don't always need to have the perfect tools to start something. Sometimes we simply start with what we have and learn how to make the most of it.
It also reminds me of something I really like about crafts: the same tool can become completely different things depending on what we imagine and how we decide to use it. That little crochet hook has been part of very different projects over the years, and each one of them carries a small piece of my story.
But above all, this crochet hook connects me with my family. First with my mom, who was the one who started teaching me how to crochet, and also with my great-grandfather, who unknowingly did something as simple as picking up a crochet hook from the street and giving it to me. Maybe neither of them imagined that this object would stay with me for so many years.
And that's what I like most about this story.
That day, my great-grandfather simply found a crochet hook and decided to give it to me. I was 7 years old and learning how to crochet. There was no great plan behind it. Yet, many years later, I still have the same crochet hook in my hands, creating new things with it.
Maybe that's what this little object represents for me: some things begin in completely unexpected ways and end up accompanying us for much longer than we ever imagined.
And if one day this crochet hook stops being useful, I don't think I would be able to throw it away. After all these years, it would no longer be simply a tool for crocheting. It would be a small piece of my childhood that I can still hold in my hands.
