Matanzas Is Celebrating Its Birthday: A Walk Through Its Origins

Today, October 12, is a special day for my city. On this day in 1693, San Carlos y San Severino de Matanzas was founded, the city where I live and a little piece of which I want to share with you today. It has now reached 333 years of history!
I have always thought there is something special about living in a place that has so many stories to tell. Sometimes we walk along its streets, pass by its buildings, or cross its plazas without stopping for long to think about everything these places have experienced. But when a date like this comes around, it makes us want to look at our city with fresh eyes and remember where part of who we are comes from.
That is why, to celebrate this anniversary, I want to take you to one of the most important places in Matanzas's history: Plaza de la Vigía, considered the city's founding center.

This plaza is closely connected to the birth of Matanzas. It was in this area that the settlement founded in 1693 began to take shape, near the bay and the rivers that are part of the city's geography.
Its name is connected to the old La Vigía fort, a defensive structure that once stood in this area. Although the space has changed over the centuries, its name remains as a reminder of that period. The city grew, its streets were transformed, and new buildings appeared, but this place remains connected to its origins.
And that is precisely what I like about historic places: they allow us to get closer to the past without having to travel through time. All we need to do is stop for a moment, observe what is in front of us, and remember that many other people walked here before us.
One of the most striking features of Plaza de la Vigía is the collection of buildings surrounding it. Each has its own story and, together, they form part of Matanzas's architectural heritage.
Among them is the Sauto Theater, inaugurated in 1863 and considered one of the most important cultural institutions in the city. Its neoclassical architecture and long artistic history have made it one of the symbols of Matanzas.
There is also the Palacio de Junco, which houses the Provincial Museum, as well as other historic buildings connected to the city's administrative and social development, such as the former Palace of Justice, which currently houses the city's Office of the Conservator.
When we look at these buildings, we can discover different stages of our history. They were not all built during the same period, nor do they share the same architectural style, but they all contribute to giving this space its own character.
For me, that is one of Matanzas's charms. Its history is not found only in books or in the dates we remember every year; it is also present in its buildings, its streets, and those places we pass so often that we risk no longer appreciating them.
The Plaza de la Vigía we know today is not exactly the same as the one that existed when the city was founded. More than three centuries have passed, and during that time the space has undergone urban transformations, architectural changes, and restoration work.
Plazas, like cities, never remain still. The needs of each era bring changes and adaptations, and Matanzas is no exception.
The interventions carried out over time have changed part of its appearance, but that does not mean it has lost its importance. On the contrary, preserving these spaces and keeping them connected to the life of the city is a way of protecting the memory of those who were here before us.
I think there is something beautiful about that continuity. We can look at an old photograph and notice differences between it and the present-day plaza, but we still recognize the same place and understand the role it has played in our history.
It is not about making everything remain exactly as it was centuries ago, but about making sure we do not forget what it represents.

333 Years of History and the Pride of Calling Matanzas My Home

Today, I did not want to share only photographs of a beautiful plaza or take you on a tour of some of its best-known buildings. I wanted to use this anniversary as an opportunity to dedicate a few words to my city.
Matanzas is known as the Athens of Cuba because of its cultural and literary traditions, and also as the Venice of Cuba because of its rivers and bridges. These are names we have heard many times, but behind them lies a city with its own history, places that are part of our collective memory, and an identity that has been built over generations.
And this is my city. My everyday life unfolds here, many of my memories are here, and I can find places that, even when I visit them again and again, always have something new to show me.
That is why I am happy to celebrate another anniversary of its founding. Thinking about all this time that has passed makes me appreciate even more the value of preserving our historic places and sharing their stories with those who may not know them yet.
I hope we can continue celebrating many more anniversaries, discovering corners of Matanzas, caring for its heritage, and learning to look more closely at the places we have so near to us.
Because sometimes we do not have to travel far to discover a fascinating story. Sometimes that story is right here in our own city, waiting for us to stop for a moment and discover it.
Happy anniversary, Matanzas! I am happy to call this city home and to share a little piece of its history with you.
Did you know Plaza de la Vigía? Which place in your city gives you that same sense of pride and belonging, and reminds you why it is special to you?
