The question of whether or not humans truly possess free will is one that has been debated by philosophers, scientists, and ordinary people alike for centuries. While free will can simply be described as an ability to make one’s own choices without being fully subject to external influences, when the structure of a society is analyzed, it is debatable whether individuals can even fully realize this power.
From the time we are born, individuals are shaped by family, culture, religion, education and social norms. Society enforces rules and regulations in order to maintain order and to protect citizens. While this order is necessary, it also limits what an individual can do or how he or she must act. An individual can also be judged for what one does, such as by having a certain style of dress or way of speaking, or an individual might be ostracized and isolated for living their life outside societal expectations. So are our choices truly free if the pressures of a society can cause one to act or behave in a certain way?
At the same time, owning the ability of free will does not mean that one can have any choice he or she wishes and will not have consequences for this choice. A society needs some type of order or framework to exist andfunction well. Rules have been formed to help protect lives and property. With this being said, citizens do have endless opportunities to make choices daily. Individuals have free will in that they chose to pursue a certain career, form certain friendships, believe in particular things and have specific life goals. The final choice is ultimately left to an individual, even though a society can certainly shape one’s thinking and behavior.
Historically, there are countless examples of people who defied societal conventions and succeeded in bringing about important and beneficial change. Such individuals as leaders in the civil rights movement, political reformers, great inventors, or brilliant artists chose to act and respond to events based on their own judgments of what was right and necessary, often going against the prevailing consensus. These actions clearly demonstrate human free will in its fullest form.
In conclusion, I think it is accurate to say that individuals do in fact have free will, though this is not without limitations. Even though society does influence the choices of many individuals, those humans who think critically still retain the power to control their own decisions and their future. Rather than be defined by freedom from all external controls, it is more precise to consider free will as having the ability to choose between different paths or options that are available.
