Shelter by the Fire

Some corners of a house seem to change when night arrives. During the day they may simply be a corner of the living room, an armchair beside a lamp, or a small space near the window. But when everything becomes quiet and the light begins to fade, those places take on another importance. It is not only about where we sit or rest, but about finding a space where we can feel protected for a few minutes.

Algunos rincones de una casa que parecen cambiar cuando llega la noche. Durante el día pueden ser simplemente una esquina de la sala, un sillón junto a una lámpara o un pequeño espacio cerca de la ventana. Pero cuando todo se vuelve silencioso y la luz comienza a escasear, esos lugares adquieren otra importancia. No se trata solamente de dónde sentarnos o descansar, sino de encontrar un espacio donde podamos sentirnos protegidos por algunos minutos.

In Cuba, many nights that feeling of refuge has a different story. Power outages are part of the daily life of families and, when the electricity goes out, the house changes almost immediately. Appliances stop working, some of the usual noises disappear, and the rooms are immersed in a darkness that makes everything seem different. Then a small light appears: a rechargeable lamp, a candle, the phone screen, or anything else that allows us to illuminate a little of the space.

En Cuba, muchas noches esa sensación de refugio tiene una historia diferente. Los apagones forman parte de la vida cotidiana de las familias y, cuando la electricidad se va, la casa cambia casi de inmediato. Los equipos dejan de funcionar, desaparecen algunos de los ruidos habituales y las habitaciones quedan sumergidas en una oscuridad que hace que todo parezca distinto. Entonces aparece una pequeña luz: una lámpara recargable, una vela, la pantalla del teléfono o cualquier otra cosa que permita iluminar un poco el espacio.

It is something strange how our relationship with light changes when we cannot take it for granted. A lamp that would normally go unnoticed can become the center of a room. Its glow is not enough to illuminate the whole house, but perhaps it does not need to be. It is enough for it to illuminate the corner where we are sitting, the table where we leave a few things, or the face of the person beside us.

Es algo raro cómo cambia nuestra relación con la luz cuando no podemos darla por segura. Una lámpara que normalmente pasaría desapercibida puede convertirse en el centro de una habitación. Su resplandor no alcanza para iluminar toda la casa, pero quizás tampoco hace falta. Basta con que ilumine el rincón donde estamos sentados, la mesa donde dejamos algunas cosas o el rostro de la persona que tenemos cerca.

Perhaps that is why I like to imagine this corner as a place sheltered by the fire, even though there is no fireplace or burning flames. The fire can simply be that small source of light that breaks the darkness and allows us to feel that we still have a space of our own within the night. It is possible that it can also be someone's company, a quiet conversation, or that moment when we stop looking at the clock and accept that we have to wait.

Tal vez por eso me gusta imaginar este rincón como un lugar al abrigo del fuego, aunque no haya una chimenea ni llamas encendidas. El fuego puede ser simplemente esa pequeña fuente de luz que rompe la oscuridad y nos permite sentir que todavía tenemos un espacio propio dentro de la noche. Es posible que también la compañía de alguien, una conversación tranquila o ese momento en que dejamos de mirar el reloj y aceptamos que toca esperar.

The last moments of the day have something special. After work, worries, and all the things we had to deal with, there comes a moment when there is no longer any need to prove anything. The rush, the responsibilities, and that kind of armor we use to face the world are left aside. We simply want to sit down and breathe for a while.

Los últimos momentos del día tienen algo especial. Después del trabajo, de las preocupaciones y de todas las cosas que tuvimos que resolver, llega un momento en que ya no hace falta demostrar nada. A un lado quedan las prisas, las responsabilidades y esa especie de armadura que utilizamos para enfrentarnos al mundo. Solo queremos sentarnos y respirar un poco.

During a power outage, this can become even more evident. The heat, lack of ventilation, mosquitoes, tiredness, and uncertainty about when the electricity will return can turn an ordinary night into an uncomfortable experience. However, even in the middle of these circumstances, people look for ways to create small spaces of tranquility. A chair in the coolest part of the house, an open window, a conversation among family members, or a small light on the table can completely change the way we experience those hours.

Durante un apagón, puede hacerse todavía más evidente. El calor, la falta de ventilación, los mosquitos, el cansancio y la incertidumbre sobre cuándo regresará la electricidad pueden convertir una noche sencilla en una experiencia incómoda. Sin embargo, incluso en medio de esas circunstancias, las personas buscan la manera de crear pequeños espacios de tranquilidad. Una silla en el lugar más fresco de la casa, una ventana abierta, una conversación entre familiares o una pequeña luz sobre la mesa pueden cambiar completamente la manera de vivir esas horas.

Although we cannot control the conditions around us. There are nights when we simply have to wait. But we can try to find that small corner that makes us feel a little better while time passes.

Aunque no podemos controlar las condiciones que nos rodean. Hay noches en las que simplemente toca esperar. Pero sí podemos intentar encontrar ese pequeño rincón que nos haga sentir un poco mejor mientras pasa el tiempo.

I like to think that refuge does not always need to be large to work. A soft light can be enough. An armchair can become the place where we catch our breath after a difficult day. A corner of the living room can hold conversations that no one else hears and thoughts that only appear when we finally have a little silence.

Me gusta pensar que el refugio no siempre necesita ser grande para funcionar. Una luz tenue puede ser suficiente. Un sillón puede convertirse en el lugar donde recuperamos el aliento después de un día difícil. Una esquina de la sala puede guardar conversaciones que nadie más escucha y pensamientos que solamente aparecen cuando finalmente tenemos un poco de silencio.

Perhaps that is why some corners are special. They do not need to have decoration or be prepared to receive visitors. Their value appears when we need them. They wait for us at the end of the day and allow us to lower our guard.

Quizás por eso algunos rincones son especiales. No necesitan tener una decoración ni estar preparados para recibir visitas. Su valor aparece cuando los necesitamos. Nos esperan al final del día y nos permiten bajar la guardia.

And when the electricity finally returns, the house fills with sounds and lights again. The appliances turn on, the rooms recover their usual appearance, and that little glow stops seeming so important. But during the time the darkness lasted, it was enough to keep us company.

Y cuando finalmente regresa la electricidad, la casa vuelve a llenarse de sonidos y luces. Los equipos se encienden, las habitaciones recuperan su aspecto habitual y ese pequeño resplandor deja de parecer tan importante. Pero durante el tiempo que duró la oscuridad, fue suficiente para acompañarnos.

The corners with soul are precisely those places that do not solve our problems, but offer us a little shelter while we find the strength to continue.

Los rincones con alma son precisamente esos lugares que no solucionan nuestros problemas, pero nos ofrecen un poco de abrigo mientras encontramos fuerzas para continuar.

Because some nights we need nothing more than a soft light, a quiet place, and the feeling of being safe for a moment.
