Hello @holos-lotus community.
Hola comunidad de
@holos-lotus.
This is the seventh chapter of “Unlearning Out Loud,” a space where I allow myself to question some ideas that we have accepted as truths for a long time. This time I want to talk about that need to be liked by everyone and how much we can end up changing the way we are in order to achieve it.
Since I was little, I thought that getting along with others meant avoiding anything that could make them uncomfortable. So, depending on who I was with, I could change a little the way I spoke, expressed myself, or even gave my opinion. It wasn't something conscious. Many times I simply adapted myself to fit into the group.
The problem comes because one thing is adapting to others and quite another is beginning to hide parts of ourselves so that no one has a reason to reject us. If we are too concerned with pleasing others, we can think before speaking: “How will this sound?”, “Will they agree?”, “What if they think badly of me?”. And we completely forget to ask ourselves what we think.
Y olvidamos por completo preguntarnos qué pensamos nosotros.
I think the need to please can also easily be confused with being a kind person. But being kind, as we already said in a previous post, is not always agreeing, staying silent when we want to speak, or saying yes when we really want to say no.
In this way I think I am more authentic. We have to accept that not everyone is going to feel comfortable with us. There will be people who disagree with the way we think, with our decisions, or simply with the way we are. And yes, that can hurt, but I feel that I am freer.
I have spent so much time thinking about how others might see me that I have forgotten that I also have the right to be comfortable with who I am. There are conversations in which I used to measure every word, not because I had nothing to say, but because I was afraid of saying something that might make someone uncomfortable.
Of course, being authentic does not mean saying everything we think regardless of how we affect others. We have to choose our words carefully, be respectful, and be considerate without turning ourselves into a version of ourselves designed to please others.
One of the things that is hardest to unlearn is thinking that we need everyone to like us in order to live peacefully. Not everyone has to understand us, share our opinions, or feel comfortable with our decisions. Whoever walks away when we stop acting as they expect will be because they never should have been close, and that is also part of being more honest with ourselves.
True harmony does not consist of getting everyone to agree with us, but in being able to relate to others without having to disappear a little in order to do so.
And you? What part of yourself have you ever hidden to please others? Tell me in the comments, I would love to read you.
