I posted this as a response to a question. Figured I merited a post of it's own. I was on a organic farm ran by some wonderful gay men in Colorado last fall. It was just after Burning Man, and I had stopped over on my way home back to Florida. It was so beautiful with the Rockies in the back ground. I stuck around a bit, enjoying the people, learning about plants, eating healthier and posting on Facebook about my adventures. I was helping them promote their community supported agriculture program to the locals and pretty much day dreaming of having a farm of my own.
One day a lady hit me up about needing help with her farm back in Florida. Knowing good and well that I'm a very lazy person, I was skeptical that I would be of any physical assistance, I reluctantly responded "Sure what can I do for you?"
Well her situation is that her 5 acres were going up for auction in a couple weeks for about ten k of back taxes!
It seems that when her mother passed away, she thought that the taxes were being paid by banks so she did not have to pay for them. Being on social security, she only had enough money to feed herself, 30 cats and a horse. She needed about twelve thousand dollars to catch up.
She asked "You help so many people out, can't you borrow money or something for me?"
I was even more broke than I was lazy. So I told her straight up "There's nothing I can do for you. The banks are forcing the sale and even my good looks can't get me anywhere near that amount. I'm sorry. ".
Few more words later she said told me she's going to give me her farm. Because she's going to lose it anyways. I posted on Facebook the situation and a legal advisor, notary public and friend piled into a car on my behalf and drove to Central Florida and she signed her shares of this derelict fish farm over to me. Oops I now have a derelict fish farm.
That's was the easy part. Now to pay for it...
