Last week, an alarm was raised in Ciudad Bolívar when several families began posting a photo on social media showing an alleged puma lying in the backyard of a house in Marhuanta, at the end of the dual carriageway.
This is the photograph that quickly went viral across WhatsApp groups and local pages, sparking immediate concern among residents of the area:
The era of artificial intelligence image generation forces us to be doubly cautious: the only danger is not just the alleged puma, but also falling into an AI-generated trap.
People expressed concern because this animal posed a risk to their lives or the peace of the neighborhood. In my case, as an animal welfare advocate, I was also worried about the animal's safety, since many people tend to take matters into their own hands.
First Findings
We arrived at the address indicated by José Meléndez, an elderly man who lives with his wife and his twenty-something grandson. When speaking with him, he stated he was certain he had seen the animal with his own eyes, as had his wife and grandson, the latter being the one who took the photograph.
Mr. Meléndez allowed us into the backyard of his house, which borders a wooded jungle area on the edge of the city. There, we were able to conduct a walkthrough and found very distinctive marks on one of the trees, starting from the very bottom of the trunk up to 6 meters high. This leads us to believe it could be a large feline that regularly climbs up there to watch from above (a very common behavior in this type of animal).
Careful not to adopt a biased stance, we took this clue as a possible confirmation or a reason to stay alert, but social media was moving much faster.
Social Media
While the investigation moved forward cautiously, social media went into a frenzy. Many people began generating images with artificial intelligence to make it look like the puma was in several parts of the neighborhood, taking advantage of a potentially real piece of news to turn it into a moment of fun—even posting an image of a woman "petting the puma" on its belly.
This posed an additional risk, because coming across AI-generated images made people question the truth about the alleged puma's presence. This created a dangerous situation: if the animal was truly out there and people failed to take precautions believing it was all a joke, a tragedy could occur.
At this point, we were not trying to cause panic, but rather to verify the information.
But, why me?
The main reason it fell to me to carry out part of the investigation alongside the team is that I have worked with Misión Nevado for several years, and although this is not exactly a small house cat, we were the closest team to the scene able to verify the situation.
In fact, we informed the city's mayor of the inspection results, and that very afternoon he traveled to the site and asked us to accompany him.
The Mayor's Visit
In order to protect the population and prevent a latent threat circulating on WhatsApp groups from becoming a reality, the mayor decided to go to the location and asked us to join him. We arrived a few minutes early, and by the time he got there, several community members were already gathering at the spot where the animal had allegedly been seen.
After welcoming the mayor, we introduced him to the owners of the house and the property where the animal had recently been spotted. From there, a walkthrough was launched jointly with firefighters, environmental authorities, and security agencies through the adjacent jungle area, without finding any further evidence of the feline.
Upon leaving the property, more than 100 people were waiting for us on the street to express their concern to the mayor, as nearby schools had even decided to suspend classes due to the rumor. We took this opportunity to talk with the neighbors and briefly inspect an area that local residents wanted to show us.
The call made to the community was to avoid going out to hunt the animal on their own in an attempt to defend themselves. Doing so could create a risk both for the animal and for the general public, since a feline like this, if cornered, could react unexpectedly.
A week has passed since then, and the only update is that people are a bit calmer and the animal has not been seen again. To be honest, very few people actually saw it in person, as most accounts came from photo references, rumors, and even AI-generated images. This does not rule out the possibility that the animal is still around, but sometimes the best way to prevent risks is not to expose ourselves in a desperate hunt.
Sometimes we forget that we share the same planet with these animals and that they have even been displaced due to human activity. In this case, it is advisable to be a bit more cautious and empathetic toward animals in order to prevent harm both to them and to ourselves.
