This is just a brief little update on our outdoor garden. These photos were taken over the course of a few weeks now so they are already a little outdated. Maybe think of it as a look at how the garden has progressed this spring and not necessarily what it looks like today - not that it matters anyway.
The first two photos are from probably a month ago now. I thought that the fog made for a neat effect on the trees. Those trees are pretty much fully leaved now and look a lot fuller at this point.
There are numerous magnolia trees along my street in the front yards of various houses. I've always really loved these types of trees. They look so pretty and colorful and they smell good as well.
I only wish that they stayed in bloom for a little longer.
In Canada they only seem to bloom for two weeks or so, depending on the weather.
This tree is actually on my in laws property and they also have a yellow one. This is the first year that I've ever noticed a yellow magnolia tree but I actually saw quite a few of them this spring.
Here is a zoomed in look at one of them. The photo would make for a good phone background I think.
What is it about cats and boxes? My cat discovered the planter boxes on our balcony a few weeks back.
She was sitting in them everyday it seemed, until we recently filled them with flower pots. My wife did that this weekend.
I think she (the cat) liked the fact that they were warm from the sun and felt protected and that they also blocked the wind on windy days.
"Hey! I can can still see you, you know?"
The daffodils came and went in the backyard and then out came the tulips.
It's a surprise every two weeks or so seeing what's going to come up in our garden.
Like I said, these photos were taken a few weeks back so now all of the tulips are gone, but they were nice while they lasted.
Intermixed with everything is periwinkle, which is a ground cover with some nice bluish flowers. It's actually pretty invasive though and continues to spread wildly everywhere, so it's somewhat taking over everything.
Next year we will probably need to figure out how we want our garden to look and begin cutting back all of the wild ground cover. At this point it's pretty much just choking everything else out.
Now the hostas a coming out and a peony plant, though it hasn't started to bloom yet. I haven't taken any photos of them since they aren't fully out at this point. Yesterday my wife picked up five tomato plants as well, which I plan to put at the side of our house where we get a decent amount of sunlight. I'm sure I'll keep you posted on that when the time comes. We have a big bird feeder out back now and that has attracted some Cardinals and Blue Jay's. I keep trying to get a good photo of them but my phone isn't powerful enough to capture something so small from even a short distance away. The black squirrels and chipmunks are loving the bird feeder and I think that more of the feed goes to them than the birds. That about does it for my update. I'll keep you posted on the progression.
