She walked barefoot across the beautifully carved wooden floor, trying to make sense of what had just happened, when a loud bang at the door shook her out of her inner trance and catapulted her to the entrance.
“Emily, it’s me, Marco. They are looking for you. We need to get out of here.”

“Only a few more miles until we reach the border, but fuel won’t take us that far. We need to stop and refill the tanks.”
“There’s a small town right after the second hill. We can stop there at Nancy’s and get gas. No cameras as far as I remember.”
“How do you know this place?” asked Marco, deeply concerned about her sister’s escapades.
“I met Nancy when I was working in supply chain down South. She had great dreams and mapped out her life pretty neatly until one day when she got a phone call from the local sheriff. Her father was killed while serving coffee in their family restaurant. A prisoner from the nearby county escaped and verbally abused one of the female guests. Her father jumped in to help, and the bastard pulled the trigger. Nancy dropped all her life plans and drove back home. I visited her once, and she showed me around. Told me if I were ever in trouble, which I always seem to get myself into, she would help me out.”
“Well, I hope your friend honors her word.”, grinned Marco while steering the driving wheel cautiously, trying to keep the tires of the truck undamaged.

“Girl, girl, girl, you’re all over the news. Why are they trying to lock you up this time?”
“Nice to see you, NanC. This is my baby brother Marco.”
“Oh, the innocent one in the family. Well, you’ve got yourself a mighty sis.”
“I need to cross the border. ALONE.”
“What? No way. I’m coming with you,” said Marco in a desperate tone.
“No, Marco. This life is not for you. NanC will help you get a new identity, and you’re free to go wherever you want.”
“Yeah, bro. Let the women talk business now. Grab a coffee over there,” said Nancy firmly, showing Marco the direction.
Nancy pulled Emily into a small office and shut the door.
Emily sighed and continued …
“They hacked my digital diary, NanC.”
“No way!”
“Yes, they did.”
“How? You’ve got access to the latest tech. Encryption, cold storage, you name it.”
“Remember the spacecraft that went down in Arizona when we were negotiating the pipelines with the Native Indians? The agency put me on that project to decipher the plasma waves used for propulsion and craft navigation. The galactic tech we found on the ship was beyond human comprehension.”
“Don’t tell me Jack is out for revenge.”
“He is the only one in the agency with clearance to the mainframe. I don’t know who else would have known of my diary.”
“Bloody stalker.”
“Take care of my little bro, OK?”
“Sure thing. Go get them, Emily.”

The cooling rooms of data centers always fascinated Emily. She enjoyed the cracking sound of ice cubes beneath mountains of wires.
“Darling, I wasn’t expecting to see you here. But then again, you always have one up your sleeve.”
“I wish I could say the same about you, Jack. You’re so predictable. … Enough with the small talk. Move over from the dashboard.”
“You know once you hit that button, there’s no turning back. Humanity’s memory will be altered, and we’ll converge with another timeline which could be less favorable.”
“Less favorable for who, Jack? For you and your career at the agency? …
You’re so talented. So gifted. But you chose this dirty job to get back at me and earn a few more nickels. You’re disgusting. Pitiful.”
“At least I accomplished something as opposed to you running from life.”
“Thanks to you hacking my diary, I stopped running. Goodbye, Jack.”
“Noooo. Please don’t hit the button.”
💎💎💎
“Your sis called. She’s coming to pick you up, Marco.”
“I knew it. Emily always keeps her promises.”
“Yeah, she does, doesn’t she?”
Nancy walked over to the counter and gave her father a big hug.
“Dad, can you prepare Emily’s favorite dish?”
“Oh, my baby girl is coming home. Wild turkey it is, ladies. …
Son, let’s go for a quick hunt. We don’t want your sister to starve.”
Before putting on his boots, Marco rushed over to Nancy and whispered into her ear:
“I hacked the diary.”
