It is so easy for the mind to attack the simplest of things. You could be sitting on a bench at the park and you just watch. To the mind it looks like an insignificant event. The mind says, "Why am I sitting here? This isn't solving any of my problems." The mind will even try to come in and remind you of what your problems are. Sometimes the old movement tries to come back in, but you see that. You come back to the freedom of being free of the conditioned.
Now you may have sometimes, especially as this state begins to rise in you, maybe short lived at first until the mind comes back in. As you sit there in that state, certain thoughts may drift in and out. They recognize these thoughts as labels again, but you're no longer in it. You allow it to be. You recognize it just as your thought. It is no longer a problem and then there's a space in between the next thought and the next thought.
We are talking about this right now in the context of neutral non-problematic situation. You're in a park or sitting at home in a familiar room. You're sitting in a chair and you simply look around in the state of clear innocent non labeling perception. Then something else happens. You suddenly realize the two dimensions. One is the objects that are appearing in your consciousness, the sense objects perception. Then you sense the field of aware presence-still, but awake, highly awake. The field of aware presence in which the sense perceptions appear. You're aware of that and that of which appears.
In other words, you're aware conscious or off awareness unconsciousness. Knowing that none of that which appears in consciousness is the essence of who you are, but consciousness itself. Consciousness is you and everything is you, but the essence of you, "I", is the field of aware presence. You are free. You know yourself as that. Then the world of form is not threatening anymore nor is it that attractive anymore. It is beautiful as it is, but doesn't threaten your sense of self nor does it promise to enhance your sense of self anymore. Now you can relax with the world because you don't feel threatened by it or enhanced by it. You've gone beyond it.
When you know yourself as consciousness, nothing matters that much. Sometimes the world becomes entirely dull after going beyond the form spiritually until you learn to live with the world of form again. With most of us, it is a more gradual realization. Surrender does not take time, but to dwell in the state of surrender as a continuous state. You can only surrender to the now.
What happens in the resistance movement is conditioned collectively will reassert itself into waves. You fall back into the state of egoic identification with the mind, back in the state of resistance, and the denial of the now. Then suddenly you see it and then you re-enter. It's a gradual entering of that place where you dwell in that state.
You don't need to lose yourself in it because it is gradual. You can learn to incorporate it into your life, not that you have to do it, but it happens by itself. The misperception could arise that then "Don't you become careless toward the world and all of the things in this world?" Strangely the opposite is true once you do it. The balance is there. Everything that you look upon, great care flows into that to which give your fullest attention. That attention is so unconditioned. In that movement of the unconditioned that looks upon the conditioned. It looks upon a thought, an emotion, or a sense object that is external.
There is a gentleness, kindness, compassion, and love with which you perceieve things and allow things. That's the beauty of it. You don't misuse the world of form in service of self. You don't misuse the form this moment takes in the service of a mentally projected future point. If you make a moment a means to an end, using it in the service of all sense of self that seeks to complete itself in the future. Whatever comes into the now is self serving and often tries to become the ends of the now.
In the egoic state, love is not possible because in the egoic state you always want something from the other. Sometimes what you want from the other is what you consider love. "I want you to complete me and I want you to sign this contract. Don't you ever dare leave me." Love, compassion, gentleness, are divine qualities. They flow through the body, but not when the conditioned mind operates. So at first you become free of movement of the conditioned in simple situations that you just allow to be. Not particularly challenging situations. Simply sitting somewhere, in a restaurant or cafe drinking a cup of tea and an alert presence arises and you simply watch. See the presence and stillness. That is the arising. You cannot go a single day without a challenge arising. Some situation that doesn't seem to have gone the way you thought it should-something going wrong, some kind of loss. Make sure your path to surrender is open. Accept unconditionally whatever the challenge is for this moment.
