Luz eléctrica y conexión a Internet en Cuba/Electricity and Internet Connection in Cuba (Esp-Eng)
Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you again.
Lately, it’s been very difficult for me to stay active on Hive, as I usually do. Not because I don’t want to, but because I can’t. In Cuba, having an internet signal has become a luxury; getting a stable and lasting connection is increasingly chaotic. For that reason, it’s almost impossible to manage to publish a post. Usually, photos won’t download, and if they do, the connection is so weak that it’s not enough to finally publish. You spend hours trying to post, sometimes almost an entire day, and nothing happens. Something similar happens when voting, reblogging, or commenting.
Living in Cuba has its little things that keep you on edge much of the time. It’s not just the bad luck of the power going out while you’re watching a series, cooking, or doing laundry—it’s a daily ritual involving electricity and the internet. I’m going to talk about it without political drama, like someone explaining how the weather works on this island: unpredictable, but with tricks to survive.
As everyone knows, the Cuban electrical system is like an old lady wearing too much makeup—it’s like that classic car you love a lot. Sometimes it starts perfectly, other times it leaves you stranded in the middle of the street. Here, we barely have electricity; instead of blackouts, we have "light-ups," and that makes life extremely difficult. It’s a draining and stressful situation that sometimes even puts us in a bad mood.
During these summer months, with the intense heat, things get worse, and consumption soars even more due to fans and air conditioners. And then… bam, blackout. With our thermoelectric plants in such poor condition, the National Electric System (SEN) collapses. It can happen in several provinces or the entire country. No one panics because everyone already knows what to do: you take out a candle, a rechargeable lamp, sit on the porch to talk with neighbors, kill mosquitoes, and wait for the power to return before the freezer or refrigerator thaws. Some people play music on portable devices so they don’t have to listen to their own thoughts. Counting stars and recognizing constellations is another healthy form of entertainment.
But the real problem comes when you add the lack of internet to the lack of electricity—which happens almost daily. Because it’s not like the connection here is abundant. A few years ago, getting WiFi was an odyssey: go to a park, buy a scratch-off access card, and crowd together with half the town staring at their phones. Later, it improved a bit thanks to mobile data (the famous 4G), but don’t get your hopes up—it fails too. Speeds are slow, prices hurt the average pocket, and if there’s a storm or power failure, you’re cut off until further notice. Even landline phone service disappears.
Having the combo "no power and no data" is hellish. Because you can’t charge your phone, you can’t cook if you don’t have gas, and a bunch of other things. So, you have to read a physical book—that never fails—or play a game of dominoes with the neighbors on the corner, who are just as bored as you.
Despite everything, people manage. Many have inverters, generators, solar panels, or truck batteries to at least keep their phone charger running. There are also those who use offline apps or download series in advance, just in case a blackout, hurricane, or breakdown turns everything upside down for many hours.
Having electricity and a stable connection in Cuba is like when a poor person wins the lottery. You enjoy it, but you don’t believe it. You think it could all disappear at any moment, that someone will come and tell you it was a mistake. So, the best thing, to avoid going crazy, is to take it with humor, because in the end, the most important thing is still how you manage without those two elements of modern life. And that, Cubans handle with a smile and a joke.
