Hello, friends. What a pleasure to greet you. Today I want to share with you a anecdote that happened to me a few years ago.
I have always been convinced that everything we do, whether good or bad, the universe returns it to us; that never fails. Our actions are a boomerang that sooner or later comes back; that's how Karma works. So here goes the anecdote.
I had been without matches in the house for a few days. Truth be told, the quality of the tiny, necessary product is terrible; to light one, you have to try with five. This makes them run out immediately. I tried to buy a matchbox holder but at that moment I couldn't find one anywhere. I spent several days asking my neighbors and my mom for matches. My mother-in-law was going through the same situation.
Around those days in January 2019, an unusual and infrequent event happened here. The passing of a terrible tornado left part of Havana city devastated. Many people were left without homes, and others lost them partially. They say the roofs flew through the sky like pieces of paper. As expected, the government leadership asked for help for the victims and called for the solidarity of the capital's residents.
Suitcases were packed with all sorts of things, and brigades were formed to go and collaborate in cleaning tasks. Through work, we were taken to the municipality of Guanabacoa, one of the affected places. When we arrived, I saw a man sitting on a corner refilling a matchbox holder. I approached him, and luckily, he had some of all colors for sale. I bought two, a yellow one which is my favorite color, and a green one for my mother-in-law. The men were assigned to collect garbage and rubble. We women were given the task of assessing the damages and needs in some homes for immediate aid.
_Si tuviera fósforos les hacía un poquito café, pero ni eso.
I was assigned to go with a coworker to the house of a young woman who lived alone with her two children. The poor woman had lost part of her roof and other belongings. We gave her some clothes, soaps, and toothpaste that we had in a bag. We began the assessment, and the young woman, who had nothing more to offer than her smile, said to us:
"If I had matches, I would make you a little coffee, but not even that."
I immediately remembered I had two matchbox holders in my purse. I confirmed that the match issue was a provincial, or perhaps national, problem.
"We're not going to miss coffee for lack of a light," I said.
Of course, I gave her the matchbox holder. She reluctantly accepted after much insistence. That day, despite seeing the disaster caused by the meteorological event, we left with the satisfaction of having helped to somewhat alleviate the misfortune of those people and with the joy of having done something useful.
Before arriving home, I stopped by my mother-in-law's house, told her the story, and left her the yellow match holder. With her, I didn't have to insist much.
"I had bought you a green one, but I left it for the young woman; she is more in need of hope."
That same night, when I went to visit my parents, this was my mom's greeting:
"Good evening, sweetheart, look, I bought you a matchbox holder, and it's yellow."
