Tonight, I’ve been creatively restless. I saw something yesterday that caught my eye. An artist on Instagram that made abstract photography with acrylic ink and water. A year or two, Apple ran an ad for one of the new iPhones with the exact same technique. I don’t know what it was; maybe the fatigue of traveling and photographing pinup work for 20 years, but all of a sudden, abstract photography sounded very exciting. I came home, did research and found a narrow vertical vase and a set of acrylic inks. They arrived today.

This was just a test. In my mind, this would be mind blowing, but in reality, it was just okay. My initial observations are that it’s way too dark. That’s kind of my thing, obviously, but the need for a high speed shutter capture means there will have to be more light. I’m going to try again tomorrow with natural window light. The narrow tank is a challenge but I didn’t want to buy a 10 gallon tank and waste all that water. This is still in the experimental stage, but it’s a great feeling to be thinking about something entirely new [for me].
I’ll most likely give this a few more attempts tomorrow. If I can figure out the exposure, I’d eventually like to build entire set designs within the tank, under water. I love brass, dead flowers and skulls. That’s where I think I want to go with it all, and shoot abstract macros with fluid and motion. So this was my night. Nice to change things up once in a while, even if some are you art disappointed there isn’t any lingerie. Thanks for reading. Follow me here
