SNOW IN AFRICA
I woke up this morning and the weather was cold, dry and freezing (Africa Snow Breeze) then i realized it’s snowing outside. I could barely breathe because it was a mixed weather of cold and hot merged together which makes breathing uncomfortable.
I quite remember when i was young anytime the Harmattan season occurs it makes our skin look smooth and dry but most of all "fresh" which is a term use to describe beauty in Ghana.
In times like this you will have to buy lots of lip gloss cause with every second you will have a dry or cracked lips and you will need one to soften your lips. As time goes on it’s going to be very tense and windy and with every second you would have to lick your lips if you don’t have a lip gloss or anything that could help.
During this time especially in sandy places or roads you would have to carry a little polish for your shoes or sandals cause no matter what you do you will be harmattized by the blowing wind.
Those in rural areas faces alot of challenges during this period, especially with their water and houses. The blowing wind spreads lots of sand into their lakes thereby contaminating the water and resulting in several illness to the people of that particular district.
Crops, food and lots of vegetables becomes dry. Water becomes cold and in the evening the temperature become very cold, same as morning and very hot and cold in the afternoon.
If you don't have a washing machine then do get one cause the dirt rate is high no matter how neat you are, and also sweeping and mopping is what you will be doing for the rest of the months. Dust gets everywhere.
Harmattan is a season were you need to use lotion, pomade or shea butter on your body if you don’t like them cause you will have dry skin and white skin color like powder been poured on your body. Harmattan is a nice season especially at night when about to sleep but very difficult to coop with. And that is the same with snow.
During this season you would need to eat as early as the food is ready cause with Harmattan every minute counts. Anything hot gets could in seconds just like snow. So Harmattan is Africa snow. And in Africa we just feel it but cannot see it.
Harmattan and What It Means
Harmattan is a season in West Africa, which occurs between the ends of November or the starting of December till middle of March. It’s very dry, cold and full of dusty wind. The name is derived from the word haramata in the Ga language. The temperature is cold in most places and hot in other places depending on the region and the time of the day.
The air is normally dry and brings desert like weather conditions. It’s prevents rainfall and sometimes creates big clouds of dust which can produce dust storms. Because of it dryness the wind can increase the risk of fire and affects the growth of certain crops.
In most West African countries the large amount of dust in the air can limit visibility and block the sun from shinning and looks like a fog (Harmattan haze) during that time of the day.
Sometimes because of its dryness it can result in nose bleeding, eyes and skin effects. Harmattan is the time in Africa were everybody covers themselves up to avoid the cold and dust.
"In northern Ghana the weather is harsh, extreme. Not in a crazy blizzard or bucketing rain or howling gale sort of way but because it is so, so dry and very hot. Dry, hot weather doesn’t cause the same dramatic effects as the conditions above but when it continues for months and months it creates problems. Basically, for people living in poverty here, the weather makes their situation worse."
