Like I usually tell people...
Since we don't want to tag along with what society has defined for us that we find appalling, society is like a moving train, and we are inside the train. When we fall out, we face criticism that will choke us out.
So society is us, and we are the society.
I was communicating with a friend who is just 23, and she said even in her 40s, she won't get married until she hits all her career goals. Yeah, I acknowledge her aim of hitting her goals, but I reminded her that once she's 30-35 and not yet married, no matter how deaf and blindfolded she would be, society is going to come for her and she'll feel it so hard. She laughed and said society has nothing to do with her life. I laughed and told her she's saying all that because she's just 23 and life hasn't really poked her with some hurdles that life brings.
It's as if we have free will to do whatever we like as long as we are not committing crimes, but it's not like that; we are very much limited in the things we do because of the societal constructs that have come to play.
Take a look at having s3x for example.
It's no longer news that s3x is no longer just for married couples. People who are yet to be married now have it casually in their relationship. In a nutshell, there's no crime for adults to have s3x even before marriage
Okay, imagine a situation where two committed church members have s3x, and the news breaks out, you know, people are going to talk bad about the situation, right?
The question is, are they no adults? Are they not up to the age of having s3x? Then why are people criticising them? That's where society comes in, and that's rooted in the societal construct of the church.
Currently in the world, a good number of countries have no law against homos3xuality, but hey, even the citizens of those countries frown at it, and anytime two males want to get married, no matter how heart-hardened they are, they still get skeptical about society and oftentimes make the venue restricted to uninvited guess because they know people (society) can disrupt the event.
In my country, this homos3xuality act is heavily frowned upon and the law is against it and although it's being practiced on a low level but even at this, the whole Nigeria is against it and most of us who have seen how easy the practice is done in other countries without much discrimination, would want to get off discrimination from our mind but it won't just work and that's as a result of the societal influence.
Take me as an example, the act irritates me a lot.
Yesterday, a guy who behaves like a woman came to my shop for patronage. I was managing the situation until another guy(his friend), who also behaves the same way, came in. The two of them were acting like women, and I just couldn't wait for them to leave my space.
